Grim Trials (PC) (Demo)

Overview:
20260623:
Setup: Azeron and mouse
Steam Game Time: 46 minutes
First Impressions:
This game seemed promising but the amount of damage I take from little projectiles feels unfair. Compounded with this is the ranged attack is safe but deals low damage compared to the melee attack. But attacking melee is so risky. Finally, there doesn't appear to be a good system for replenishing life.

Aside from the main fighting experience, I'm not a fan of the crafting system.

Overall, the similarities to Hades are clear, and I'm not sure if the differences (e.g., crafting) meaningful add to the core gameplay loop which I enjoyed with Hades. Of course, this could be some bias where I'm not that good at the game and so I'm projecting that feeling onto the game itself.

Demo Rating: 2.8 out of 5

I watched a YouTube playthrough of the demo today. The player observed the basic range weapon attack stuns enemies while the basic melee weapon attack does not. Not until upgrading the basic melee weapon to the reaper weapon does the melee weapon do stun. Thus prior to the upgrade, players can mix range and melee to keep the enemy stunned.

I decided to play some more. I got more accustomed to the cadence of fighting and chose better upgrades. Due to the stunning, I went for ranged upgrades and synergized with a ranged-focus skill tree. While this made the game easier, I still did not like the crafting system. I did, however, enjoy the skill tree.

Overall, I guess I'll bump my rating up to 3.6 out of 5.
