20190510:
Yesterday I played a game from my Steam library, Epic Battle Fantasy 4. Today I made it a goal to play a game from my Twitch library (with the requirement that I don't already own the game on Steam). I chose Hyper Light Drifter.
Setup: Standard Difficulty. 1) Xbox controller. 2) Keyboard and Mouse
The game opened with impressive artwork.
Unfortunately, the game lost a point with it's controls which were difficult to master.
With that being said, I acquired a reasonable grasp of the controls toward the end of my hour with the game and overall I enjoyed the atmosphere.
Game Time: Approximately 1 hour
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Absolutely love the art
+ Atmospheric
+ Automatic checkpoints close to the point of death
+ Good sound effects
Neutral:
~ From my time with the game, it seems nonlinear; most likely it is designed with a nonlinear feel, but it is linear
~ Game controls were not intuitive for me; partial tutorial
~ Heals are an important and reasonably rare pick-up.
Con:
- Initially played with a controller, but it was harder for me than using keyboard + mouse. I suppose there are moments where using a controller would theoretically be easier.
Summary:
Hyper Light Drifter immediately resonates cool and the fighting mechanics give off the same vibe. As such, if you're into adventure games such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, then I would recommend Hyper Light Drifter.
