This game is simple, yet difficult. It is difficult in part because the player starts with finitely many lives in a given run of levels (with some opportunities to regain 1-UPs along the way). Implementing a finite life system fits the retro look of the game, but annoying relative to other modern difficult platformers whose difficulty is in the execution on a level by level basis instead of the execution on a series of levels. Technically speaking, one can view a series of levels as one level, but the level design pulls one mentally away from that point of view. It's kind of like the difference between a six-part tv series (~5-6 hours total) and a two-part movie series (also 5-6 hours total). The change in format provides a completely different feel.
In any case, I stopped playing due to a level in Stage 3 which requires jumping in water while not landing on the spike floor. Either I misunderstanding the mechanic or it requires great precision. From what I can tell, the player is not allowed to jump too quickly or the player has to jump very quickly (perhaps exactly twice as quickly). In retrospect, I feel like I had passed that level when I was pressing jump fast as possible instead of trying to time it correctly.
Steam Game Time: 18 minutes (total game time)

The way this game starts back at the beginning (of a stage) and the difficulty of the levels makes it hard to enjoy for an extended duration.
Today I was able to get pass the level that was previously giving me trouble at a much better rate, maybe 33% success today vs less than 5% before. Note that I learned the level doesn't require spamming jump, and I prefer not to spam to jump, but the window for it is small (I believe two or three jumps are required). Unfortunately, that approximate 33% success rate means sometimes I leave that level with 0 lives to spare (there is basically no hope... haha) and sometimes with 3 lives to spare (yay!).
One difficult level that follows is a jump over a tall spike column. It is hard but not as hard as the aforementioned level. Going far right prior to jumping is helpful for me. I think it's three jumps while pressing left, though not too fast or else the player character will hit the ceiling and rebound into the spikes.
Then the one level that finishes me off (if not the tall spike column level) is another level where there are spikes linig the floor ahead of the player character. But the situation is slightly different. I think the ceiling is lower relative to where the player is standing, so it requires the player to drop towards the spike for the right amount of time.
Steam Game Time: 31 minutes (total game time) / 13 minutes (session game time)

While writing up this post, I saw that the game has the "Precision Platformer" tag on Steam. In this way, the difficulty of the game is different than what I'm used to in difficult platformers (e.g., Super Meat Boy and Celeste).
