Cogs (PC) (2009)

It's so simple, just move the tiles around!
Overview and Recommendation:
Cogs is a puzzler whose main game mechanic is based on Game of Fifteen (or 15-puzzle). While knowing the basic tricks in solving a scrambled Game of Fifteen may come in handy, the player will likely acquire those skills regardless. In any case, Cogs adds a lot of depth and beauty to a simple idea and I would recommend the game to anybody who enjoys playing puzzle games.

My Steam Achievements shows gameplay on April 18, 2011, April 21, 2011, and November 26, 2011. In particular, I would deduce that I first played the game in April 18, 2011 and that there wasn't any gameplay on April 19, 2011 or April 20, 2011.

Some puzzles require rotating the puzzle around.

20140416:
I played some Cogs today, continuing from the decent amount of progress I've already made (321 stars). By the end of the run I had completed all the levels up to and including Radiator (Inventor's Mode, Time, and Moves). In terms of stars, I gained 114 stars for a total of 435 stars.

The puzzle here has been partially rotated.
Breaking this number down, there are twenty-seven levels up to and including Radiator, with ten stars coming from Inventor's Mode, three stars coming from Time Mode, and three stars coming from the Moves Mode per level. This makes for 27*16=432 stars. The remaining three stars come from completing "Portal 2: Portals" in Inventor's mode.

Some things I was reminded of:
1) The corresponding Time and Moves levels are variations of the levels found in Inventor's Mode.
2) Levels must be completed in Inventor's Mode before they are unlocked in the Time or Move modes.

Steam Game Time: 9.7 hours (total game time)

In Inventor's Mode, gain stars by finding a solution, beating it quickly, and using less moves.
20220925 AM Hours:
Playing with a trackpad of the Steam Deck isn't the best way to play this game, but it's not bad. My right index finger on the trigger got fatigued.

Steam Game Time: 11.7 hours (total game time) / 2.0 hours (session game time)
20220925:
Today I completed a lot and I went for some achievements.

Gears, gears, and gears, oh my!
I have four levels left in order to earn every star: podcopter GBS 6, hoverpod GSG 8, dual hoverpod GSG 8, and end credits GBS 6.

In addition to the Sproketeer achievement (earn every star), I'm also missing the Aeronaut achievement: earn triple gold on all flying levels.

Steam Game Time: 17.6 hours (total game time) / 5.9 hours (session game time)

Completing a puzzle not only feels good, but looks good too!

20220926:
Today I completed all the achievements. I kind of want to do a run through all the puzzles on my PC in order to record my solutions or perhaps challenge myself to defeat 'Move' levels in fewer moves. But not today.

Steam Game Time: 18.6 hours (total game time) / 1.0 hours (session game time)

20231224:
Today my main objective was ensuring backup of the game save from Steam Deck to PC. However, what I discovered was that there were two Portal levels that showed up on my PC installation of the game but were did not show on my Steam Deck installation of the game.

Gameplay Log:
Taking notes. I completed "Portal 2: <Test>" in 4:17 and 264 moves.
I also completed the level's two Challenge Mode variants.
I then took a lot of time taking notes for "Portal 2: Portals". I eventually solved the puzzle in Inventor Mode but it was already late and I wasn't going to also tackle the Challenge Mode. Also completing that level unlocked "Portal 2: WCC".

Steam Game Time: 26.2 hours (cumulative game time) / 7.6 hours (session game time)

Some levels are less straightforward than others.
