The Basement Collection (PC) (2012)

Meat Boy

Gameplay Log:
Meat Boy (2008)
This predecessor of Super Meat Boy (PC) (2010) is fun, but has slightly less fluid controls and without the timer, the incentive to replay a level is gone. The "cutscenes" are also much simpler than now. With that being said, the game is still fun and challenging. I definitely look forward to playing more of Meat Boy and completing it.

Game Time (Meat Boy): ~0.5 hours

Coil

Coil (2008)
I completed Coil once before, so I had recalled most of the movements to progress. The game as it appears here doesn't seem different in any way.

Game Time (Coil): ~0.2 hours

Triachnid

Triachnid (2006)
While initially this game seemed fun, I unfortunately did not enjoy the first level. The game mechanics seemed too difficult for me to continue playing.

Game Time (Triachnid): ~0.2 hours

Aether

Aether (2008)
I'm just gonna pronounce the name of this game like "ether." In any case, this game was too nonlinear for me. Traveling from one planet to the other was sort of fun, but figuring out what to do felt boring. After a couple minutes, I couldn't take any more of the game.

Game Time (Aether): ~0.2 hours

Time Fcuk

Time Fcuk (2009)
This platformer puzzle game is definitely the type of game I enjoy playing. It can be difficult at times, but the challenge is a pleasure. Similar games would be Toki Tori (PC) (2010) and Braid (PC) (2009).

Game Time (Time Fcuk): ~3.7 hours / ~1.7 hours to complete chapter 1 + ~2.0 hours playing chapter 2
Game Time (The Basement Collection): ~5.0 hours

Spewer

Gameplay Log:
Spewer (2009)
In Spewer, you play as Mindy and the main game mechanics are to intake and expel vomit. As the game progresses, there are pills which change the effect of the vomit being spewed.

In contrast to Time Fcuk, Spewer's storyline is more subtle and lacking. Nevertheless, I definitely enjoyed it.

Game Time (Spewer): ~1.7 hours

Grey Matter

Grey Matter (2008)
The image used for Grey Matter on the menu screen freaked me out a bit and almost discouraged me from playing. However, I gave the game a try and found that it was a delightful shooter.

Goal: Earn combos by continuously destroying three like enemies in a row. Enemies within the triangle formed by the three like enemies are also destroyed. This can be good in the short run when you want to quickly boost your combo, but not necessarily good in the long run as it may leave enemies without a multiple of three.

Learning what hurts and what the power-ups do takes some guess and check, but I suppose that's part of the fun. Overall, I enjoyed this simple shooter.

Game Time (Grey Matter): ~0.6 hours
A.V.G.M.

A.V.G.M. (2009)
A clicker game

Game Time (A.V.G.M.): ~1.2 hours Game Time (The Basement Collection): ~8.7 hours

20240126: Time Fcuk (2009)
Among the different games in the basement collection, I was most drawn to playing Time Fcuk. While the save file appeared lost, I was fine playing the game from the beginning.

Gameplay Log:
No save file so start from beginning.
I think I accidentally used a level skip. In any case, I completed Chapter 1.
Watching my old recording of Cornered to save time figuring it out.
Gave Stasis II a try and then watched my old recording.
D4. Used my old recording to figure it out.
Completed Chapter 2
Started an Unknown run but gave up because it was late at night and I was getting sleepy. 33 levels is a lot. I think I got through about 20.

Steam Game Time: 16.2 hours (cumulative game time) / 7.5 hours (session game time)

20240127:
Time Fcuk (2009)
I previously mentioned similar games being Toki Tori and Braid. However, I would definitely disagree about it being similar with Toki Tori which has a lot more weight on the puzzle element. Meanwhile, the comparison to Braid is okay, but between platforming and puzzling, Braid leans towards puzzling and Time Fcuk leans towards platforming. If anything, I'd say Time Fcuk is more like Super Meat Boy (after all, the same developer) but with more spatterings of puzzling than Super Meat Boy. For example, Time Fcuk has elements of figuring out how to move around boxes, using boxes to trigger switches, and switching between multiple dimensions. There are times when precision jumping is required - but more so in user-created levels and less so in the main game.

Gameplay Log:
About 10 levels in. Walk away at 7:53AM
Resume at 9:41AM.
Accidentally exited the level at 10:19AM. Wah wah.

Steam Game Time: 19.9 hours (cumulative game time) / 1.9 hours (session game time) + 1.8 hours (idle time)
