Beholder (PC) (2016)

Overview: Your job is to spy on your tenants and report them to the government. However, you have a choice in the matter. What will you decide to do?

20190829:

Install hidden security cameras in order to spy on the occupants.

Steam Game Time: 71 minutes

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Great theme
+ Atmospheric
+ Tough choices

Neutral:
~ This type of game benefits from playing multiple times to understand and play

Look through the keyholes.

Cons:
- I'm not fond of navigating around the apartment.
- As a new player, hovering to find objects which hold items is annoying.

Summary:
I can see this game being fun for some people, but some of the early game was a mixture of being too slow and too stressful for me. In the past I must have enjoyed and/or desired playing games which required players to make difficult choices, but now I greatly appreciate simple games.

HunieCam Studio (PC) (2016)

Overview: A business management simulator. In HunieCam Studio, the player runs a cam girl operation. Recruit girls and try to get as many fans as possible in the course of 21 days. Resource management includes photo shoots and running ads.

20190826:
Over the past couple of weeks I've been going through my Humble Bundle purchases. Today I arrived at the Humble Hunie Sekai Bundle and out of the various games I decided to play HunieCam Studio which seemed like a casual game (as opposed to the various visual novels).

Nora

Gameplay Log:
Played for 0.8 hours before dinner.
Played 5.1 additional hours after dinner. Addicting. Surprisingly fun resource management game.
: First 1.6 hours to finish the first run (for a total of 2.4 hours on the first save file): 8353 fans [Save File A]
: Another 2.3 hours to finish the second run: 30,895 fans [Save File B]
: Then 0.7 hours on a third run which I stopped at Day 7 8:15 AM (-2,765 dollars) [Save File C]
: Finally 0.2 hours on the forth run when I quit the game.
: Note: Apparently there was about 0.2 hours spent on the main menu (either idle or purchasing hairstyles/wardrobe).
But then I was addicted and came back for another 3.5 hours more!
: 2.5 hours to finish that fourth run: 99,560 fans (nooooo!!! short of Diamond by 440 fans) [Save File D]
:: It's possible, in hindsight, a different selection of promos would have gotten it for me but I don't want to do the math...
: Overwrite Save File C with new game.
: Approximately the remaining hour to start a fifth run which was going well but I was also falling asleep (and this might have lowered my efficiency). Paused at Day 10.

Hire girls to do various tasks (represented by different buildings) such as doing a cam show, getting a photo shoot done, and buying drinks.

Steam Game Time: 9.4 hours (total game time)

20190827:

Gameplay Log:
Played 2.2 hours (total 3.2 hours) with approximately 0.2 hours spent idle: 104,936 fans [Save File C]
Achievement Hunting. Shooting for both "Earn the Gold trophy without escorting" and "Purchase every investment within 21 days" (with priority to the "Gold" achievement).
: Played approximately 2.9 hours: 127,901 fans [Save File E] (accomplished both aforementioned achievements).
I stopped playing there, but was curious about the "Silver Skinflute" achievement. Answer: wording should be "Earn the Silver trophy with at most two recruits."

Steam Game Time: 14.5 hours (total game time) / 5.1 hours (today's game time)

Keep track of what the fans are interested in. Fetishes (i.e., genres) include fit, ebony, and anal.

20190828 AM Hours:

Gameplay Log:
Achievement Hunting. Shooting for "Earn the Silver trophy using only 3 girls." And so I don't go overboard, Silver is reached is at 10K.
: Oh no. I ended up getting close to 100K and if I started the sprint for Sleezy Hotel sooner I might have gotten it. I had 344K to spend on one more promo. I'll have to review the video to see how close I came to breaking 100K under these conditions.
: Played approximately 2.2 hours: 92,282 fans [Save File F] (accomplished achievement)

Steam Game Time: 16.7 hours (total game time) / 2.2 hours (session game time)

20190828:

Gameplay Log:
Overwrite Save File A with new game.
Achievement Hunting. Shooting for "Earn the Bronze trophy without using accessories." Might also do "Brand Loyalty" and "Catch 'Em All" if convenient.
: Played approximately 2.2 hours: 38,639 fans [Save File A] (accomplished all three planned achievements)
Overwrite Save File B with new game.

Diamond!!!

Achievement Hunting. Last achievement: unlock all outfit/hairstyles. Also testing out the hard mode.
: Spent about 0.4 hours and it was difficult! Either the RNG was bad or my strategy was bad (I stuck with the cycle of character I normally use. It's easier to identify names and fetishes that way).
: Overwrite Save File B with new game, just normal mode. I just want to get the last achievement and set this game aside.
: Played about 2.3 hours: 45,355 fans [Save File B]
: Got exactly enough coins (8) to unlock the remaining 8 outfit/hairstyles.

Steam Game Time: 21.6 hours (total game time)

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Humorous
+ Interesting game mechanics

Neutral:
~ Hard Mode is a challenge
~ No story

Endgame Stats

Cons:
- No fast forward or automation
- Repetitive

Summary:
While the game was repetitive, it was fun enough for me to play until I had completed all the Steam Achievements. Although the game was a resource management game, it had aspects of being a clicker, and clickers are mysteriously addicting.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut (PC) (2014)

Overview: A turn-based tactical RPG. Originally released as an expansion for Shadowrun Returns, the Dragonfall campaign is featured here as a standalone release with improvements and extras.

Talking to Lucky Strike

20190823:
Today I decided to play this game to break even on my purchase of the Humble Classics Return Bundle.

Setup: Normal difficulty. I decided to make a female elf with the Street Samurai archetype.* Spent 6 karma as follows: Ranged Combat to 4, Biotech to 1, Chi Casting to 1. For my first etiquette I chose Shadowrunner.

Gameplay Log:
Tip: Apparently one can play the characters in any order, just click on the character. Only press "End" when you're done.
I played for 59 minutes, reaching the point to where I have to survive for 10 turns after Monika dies.
I played another 1.5 hours
Then I played for another 1.9 hours
Tip: The player only has to worry about his/her own items. The player can loan items to NPCs and get them back after the end of a mission (unless the item was a consumable that was used).
Tip: Glory's medkits are free to use. They will replenish on their own without using money.

Eiger apologizes.

Steam Game Time: 4.4 hours (total game time)

*In hindsight, after putting 4.4 hours into the game, I should have went Decker.

20190824:
I was thinking about moving on to another game. However, I did a lot of reading and couldn't help and so I wanted to try a new game with a different set-up. In particular, I wanted to put points into rifle instead of pistol.

Setup: Normal difficulty. Female elf with customized karma points: Body (4) | Quickness (3) \ Ranged Combat (3) \\ Rifle (3) \ Dodge (3) | Intelligence (3) \ Biotech (3) \ Decking (3) \ Drone Control (3) | Charisma (3) | Unspent: 2 karma. For my first etiquette I chose security. [I read corporate, street, and security are good; though some players would recommend roleplaying and doing what feel natural]

Gameplay Log:
I played for 1.3 hours (5.7 hours total).
Charisma to 4: chose street etiquette.
Went to an old save file (start of sewer mission) and lost about 1 hour of progress. In the future, I should save before going back to an old save file.

Dietrich

Steam Game Time: 9.9 hours (total game time) / 5.5 hours (session game time)

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Story and text choices is engaging; replies feel like they matter
+ A true role-playing experience; design your character the way you want to play and generally there are good dialogue choices to respond as you feel your character would respond
+ Benefits from multiple playthroughs (create a character that fills a different role)

Neutral:
~ Movement feels slow
~ It looks strange to have the team members follow the lead character as opposed to collapsing into the lead character
~ The aspects of the game are fairly easy to learn, yet the developers could have probably included a handful of tooltips for the beginner.

Fighting a giant scorpion.

Cons:
- No undo button for movement. Sometimes I walk somewhere expecting line of sight, but the line of sight is blocked (see next).
- I wish there was a way to preview line of sight (e.g., provide a movement preview, see previous)
- In battle, sometimes it's extremely difficult to move a character to a specific location because the location is essentially blocked by another character: hovering over the intended tile triggers the blocking character's info; other games handle this by allowing the player to cycle through potential targets.
- Some of the combat text is misleading; for example, when using the healing spell, a character that is wounded but out of range will read as not wounded.

Summary:
This game is different from the games I usually play (e.g., action-adventure, puzzle games, shooters) and I suppose for that alone I enjoyed it. Actually, I tend to enjoy a good story and this RPG has a good story. With that being said, some of the game's mechanics could have been improved. For example, none of the etiquettes have explanations and yet the first-time player is expected just to pick one. It's also very easy for a beginner to waste karma before being told that specializing is important.

Skullgirls (PC) (2013)

Overview: A 2D fighting game. The story centers around the Skull Heart. It grants a wish to a woman and in return inhabits her body until she becomes a Skullgirl.

Player Parasoul defeats AI Parasoul (Story Mode)

20190819:
As I continue my goal to breaking even on Humble Bundles, today I decided to play Skullgirls - part of the Humble Brawler Bundle.

This game uses six fighting buttons and more double button presses making it hard to execute moves on the gamepad. In comparison, I recently played Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- which only used five fighting buttons and less double button presses.

Setup: Windowed. Xbox Gamepad.

Parasoul and Valentine (Story Mode)

Gameplay Log:
Went through part of the tutorial.
Cut it short and played Parasoul's tutorial.
Played Parasoul Story Mode.
: In story mode I found Parasoul's 4,6,P to be good poke. In fact, I used it exclusively against Marie.
: I was initially trying to practice her 2,1,4,K without fully understanding how it works. Apparently she can either trigger them or let the explode on their own. If they explode on their own, then the opponent may or may not get hit by them.

Filia versus Peacock (Tutorial)

Steam Game Time: 99 minutes

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Most of the artwork is nice; I thought some of the artwork looked weird
+ Tutorial

Con:
- Combo-heavy with seemingly little to no counterplay.

Parasoul versus Marie (Story Mode)

Summary:
I enjoyed playing the game, but between this game and Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- which I played recently, then I would personally prefer -SIGN-. In general, I preferred the art style and fighting mechanics of -SIGN- more than that of Skullgirls. With that being said, I barely scratched the surface with either games and my general knowledge of fighting games is thin.

Memoria (PC) (2013)

Overview: A point and click adventure which contains two related stories separated by hundred of years. In the present, a bird-catcher named Geron is trying to change his girlfriend Nuri back to her old self - she is currently a raven. In the past, a princess named Sadja wants to be a war hero in order to have her name remembered. The game is a direct sequel to Chains of Satinav.

20190814:
I only paid a dollar for the Humble Daedalic Bundle 2018, and in order to break even on my purchase, it was enough to play one of the four games I acquired in the bundle (Memoria, Caravan, Deponia: The Complete Journey, Anna's Quest). Among the choices, I decided to play Memoria.

Sadja is stuck in a tomb.

Setup: At first I tried playing full screen, but I later played the game in window mode (I was under the impression I would encounter less bugs).

Gameplay Log:
Game crashed at "intro" (12 minutes total game time)
The game appears to have autosaved at before the first puzzle (prior to entering the tent).
Press escape to skip the cutscene. Game crashed again.
Steam thread: Game Crashes after "intro"
Changed executable to run as administrator:
Right click on executable and go to Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab.
Check the Run this program as an administrator box.
Click Apply.

Geron in his home with Nuri, a fairy stuck in the form of a raven.

Spammed Esc key during opening.
Went into Options Menu to fix the sound; for some reason the volumes on all the sound settings were at zero.
Streamlabs OBS was also no longer able to capture the game. Restarted.
Game kind of freezes/lags. Result is I can't pick up the dagger while in the tomb. This is after retrieving the staff. (71 minutes total game time)
Stuck at escaping the tomb. Looked up info at 102 minutes total game time: "Use the deactivation spell with one of the tomb lamp. Use the sticky dagger with the sliver of light. Look through it."*
Stuck at needing to distract Bryda. I think I distracted the girl but the game state changed and got stuck. At 2.2 hours total game time, looked up info: "Ask Nuri (you have her in the inventory) to hide behind the pillar and talk with the magician."*
: Ugh. When I tried to use Nuri she complained about not being able to fly.
Stopped looking for the pieces Bryda needs. She gave a list of three things: drawing, trap, and power accumulator. I have a drawing and the power accumulator. I found two glass shards and I'm not sure how many more there are. I forgot to use the lens in the academy. (3.4 hours total game time)

Steam Game Time: 3.4 hours (total game time)

Sadja, forced to fend for herself, attempts to catch a rabbit.

*Memoria Game Guide by Game Pressure

20190815:
Gameplay Log:
Stuck at Rachwan's necklace. Looked up info at 4.5 hours total game time: Pick up a stone and use it with the small waterfall.*
: Oh. I didn't see the hotspot for the small waterfall. I think the hotspot should have been higher.
Chapter III complete (5.3 hours total game time) Took a break
I learned that the game is a sequel to Chains of Satinav.
After the dream of Sadja, a bunch of dialogue got skipped when encountering the "demon." Had to find a YouTube video to easily see the missed dialogue.
Chapter IV complete (6.1 hours total game time)
Had to pause. Accidentally left game on. Game was idle for about 2.3 hours. (9.8 hours total game time / 2.3 hours total idle time)
Chapter V complete (10.4 hours total game time)
Chapter VI complete (10.9 hours total game time)

Nuri flies in through the window to look for a way in for Geron.

Stuck at floating crystals (versus tentacles). Looked up info at 11.9 hours total game time: "Use the ornamental head with the crystal [in Tower II]"*
: This must be by far the most uninspired solution in this game. Felt utterly stupid. No reason behind it. Especially annoying since the character is always saying she hates guesswork.
Oh my goodness. These floating crystals continue with stupid solutions: use of the belt felt unsatisfying
Chapter VII complete (12.9 hours total game time)
Chapter VIII complete (13.4 hours total game time)
Tried to get various achievements by loading various save files. (14.4 hours total game time)

Steam Game Time: 14.4 hours (total game time)

Having finished the game yesterday, I continued playing the game and going for the last of the achievements.

Gameplay Log:
More achievement hunting.
Took some time to map out the forest for fun (part of the time was for an achievement).
Gave up on Sadist achievement: "As Geron in the Bodiak's house touch the petrified Owlric. Use the repair spell with the Owlric and then touch him again. Do this ten times."*
: Apparently I was one short of ten. Hmm. Not sure how I feel about this achievement.
For the last achievement I needed (Caverns of Fail), the in-game achievements list informs that it occurs before the end of Chapter V and likely after the collection of elementals. Whether accidentally or intentionally, I ended up learning the solution from the walkthrough: You need to move cursor on the left rock (there is no hotspot).*
: I'm not sure how I feel about the solution not having a hotspot.

Steam Game Time: 16.8 hours (total game time)

Geron and Nuri at the Waterfall.

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Excellent story (a little rough around the edges)
+ Beautifully drawn with attention to detail.

Neutral:
~ An annoying thing about puzzle games is that it's hard to tell whether or not a puzzle is poorly designed or if I, the player, missed something right in front of me. While playing this game, I didn't care and I just looked up the solution if I was stuck on a puzzle for too long.

Cons:
- Has game breaking bugs and minor bugs. In general, save often and worst-case scenario use a save file from the Daedalic support page.
- Sometimes the characters are given an animation which doesn't match the situation.

Sadja tries to find her way through the forest. She (the player) leaves berries on the floor to prevent getting lost.

Summary:
For the most part, I enjoyed Memoria. My effort to finish the game is a partial indication of this. However, the game was not without its flaws. There were bugs along the way and some of the puzzles just didn't make any sense, especially towards the end. With that being said, I've learned to not linger on such puzzles and I'm no longer hesitant about looking up solutions to difficult puzzles in point-and-click adventure games. That is, when in doubt, I assume the puzzle is poorly designed and I'm fine with learning it could have been a mistake on my part.

Overall, I would highly recommend the game, although I did learn that technically it's a direct sequel to the point-and-click adventured titled Chains of Satinav. I've read it's not important to play the first game, but I did get the feeling that small parts of this game would have made more sense having played it.

Pathfinder Adventures (PC) (2017)

Overview: A digital adaptation of Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. An RPG centered around cards and dice rolling.

20190811:
Out of the various games I acquired from the Humble Board Games Bundle by Asmodee Digital, I decided to play Pathfinder Adventures.

Kyra (left and bottom right) and Merisiel (right)

Gameplay Log:
Tutorial (1 hr 40 minutes)
First scenario (1 hour)

Steam Game Time: 2.6 hours

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Advantages to actual board game:
: Cheap
: Software handles all the numbers
: Ease of set-up - the actual board game requires collecting and finding the necessary cards as they are required
+ Core gameplay was fun

Merisiel (bottom right)

Neutral:
~ What's the point of giving the character a nickname?
~ There is a tutorial, but it's not the best possible
~ Card deck building game but limited to a stash of 10 cards which inhibits deck-building abilities [20190813: The board game from which this game was adapted did not allow for any stash. I suppose one could argue that a character can only hold so many items and bring so many allies on his/her adventure. Moved from "Major Con" to "Neutral."]

Cons:
- Intrusive tips; tips should disappear, be in a different position, or be movable
- Didn't understand the point of gold. I went to the "Store" and there was nothing being sold. [Update: I later started the game and the Store was properly populated with items; apparently I had encountered a bug]
- Some of the terms used in the tutorial weren't explained well*
- The source game can be played with 1-4 players (1-6 with the character add-on deck), but this adaptation is only built as a single-player experience.

Taking down the Sandpoint Devil

Major Con:
- Bugged: an in-game pop-up which didn't close.

*Specifically Discard/Bury/Banish. Discard: card goes from hand to discard pile. Cards in the discard pile have the opportunity to return to the character's deck and/or hand. Bury: card is lost for the rest of the scenario. Banish: card is lost from card pile forever. To add to this, we have Recharge: put a card at the bottom of the character deck.

Summary:
While the core gameplay was fun, the game had some bugs and UI issues which dampened the experience. And although I rarely play multiplayer/co-op nowadays, the lack of multiplayer is a big hit to the experience.

One interesting aspect of the game is the fixed deck size per character. Each character deck is composed of a certain number of cards and the player must add/reduce/swap out cards to meet those numbers. My initial reaction to this was negative. However, upon learning that the source game also operated under this condition, I took some time to understand the mechanic. I reasoned that it is similar to games which limit a player's inventory. In some RPGs, such a system is managed by a player's maximum weight capacity. As this is a card game, a fixed deck size seems like an appropriate alternative.

Overall, I'm on the fence on whether or not I'd revisit this game. Having only played the first scenario, I have no information on how repetitive the game will feel. My fear is that the game would feel like a grind.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (PC) (2015)

Overview: A fighting game belonging to the Guilty Gear series.

Millia Rage defeats I-No (Arcade Mode)

20190808:
Today I decided to play Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, because it was one of the two games in the Yogscast Jingle Jam 2018 bundle with the highest retail value ($29.99). The higher the retail value, the higher the lowest sale price. That benefits me, because I've been trying to break even on my Humble Bundle purchases and I use the lowest sale price as part of the metric for breaking even. For -SIGN-, the lowest recorded price on Steam is $5.99. Since I played the game today for 3.5 hours, that contributes $13.09 towards my goal of breaking even on the YJJ 2018 bundle ($35), where $13.09 was determined by a custom weight function.* Despite choosing to play the game based on its value, I enjoyed playing it.

Setup: Fullscreen. Xbox Controller.

Gameplay Log:
Played the tutorial (~1.25 hours)
Played Sol Badguy Arcade (~50 minutes)
Story Mode (~5 minutes)
Played Sol Badguy Challenge (~15 minutes)
Played Millia Rage Arcade (~50 minutes)

Sol Badguy versus Ramlethal (Arcade Mode)

Tips/Notes:
While writing this blog I came up with the following.
The tutorial took me a long time, but it went over many mechanics which I wouldn't have known about. With that being said, I forgot about most of them and wish I had written/found a reference sheet. I intend to write and/or look for a reference sheet.
Among the different items that would make the reference sheet, the one that I wish I remembered and overlooked during play was the Dust attack (LB). There were many moments while playing as Millia where I wanted to break the opponent's guard but didn't remember the appropriate attack.

Steam Game Time: 3.5 hours

*The weight function caps out and the maximum a game can contribute is (currently) about 2.2 times the lowest recorded price (at the time of play). Thus for -SIGN-, the maximum contribution would be $13.19.

[20190808]

20190809:
Today I decided to play more.

Millia Rage versus Venom (Arcade Mode)

Gameplay Log:
Spent some more time in tutorial to write a reference sheet. (4.3 hours total = ~0.8 hours)
Played Millia Rage Challenge (~50 minutes)
Played Mission Mode (~2 minutes)
Played Millia Rage M.O.M. (~10 minutes)

Tips/Notes:
Millia has a move called Silent Force where she throws a knife. I spent some time in the tutorial not being able to execute the move (and it confused me because the button input seemed correct). Apparently she cannot use the move again until she picks up the knife.

Steam Game Time: 5.7 hours (total game time) / 2.2 hours (session game time)

[20190809]

Millia Rage defeats Ky Kiske (Arcade Mode)

20190825 Part One:
Today my fight stick came and I couldn't wait to try it out. Among the fighting games I played recently,* I decided to first try the stick with Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. While there was definitely a need to adapt, I felt as if the fight stick enabled me to more easily execute the combos in challenge mode. Though to be fair, half the work was probably cut out for me since I had previously executed them. Regardless, I like the feel of the fight stick over the gamepad - especially using my fingers (fight stick) to press the attack buttons instead of primarily depending on the thumb (gamepad).

Gameplay Log:
Played Millia Rage Challenge (~55 minutes)
Played Millia Rage Arcade (~4 minutes)

Steam Game Time: 6.7 hours (total game time) / 1.0 hours (session game time)

*-SIGN-, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Skullgirls.

20190825 Part Two:
Before going to sleep, I played some more. I just kept rematching against Ky Kiske as Millia Rage in the Versus Mode. Instead of focusing on winning, I focused on various specials and combos. I occasionally caught myself button mashing. Towards the end, I was getting the hang of P,2+HS,JumpBreak,combo.

Steam Game Time: 0.7 hours (session game time)

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Story
+ Animation
+ Tutorial covers many topics

Sol Badguy defeats Ramlethal (Arcade Mode)

+ Variety of fighting mechanics/systems (see next)
+ Less about long combos, more about attacks that allow for counterplay.

Con:
- Tutorial covers many topics; Perhaps the developers could think of a more efficient way to teach the player about all the systems.*

*This series of YouTube videos captures the idea of what I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj34EySs1IeZ8GpjKW8R2T6dzI6B3GSuH

[20190809]

Summary:
I haven't dived into learning a fighting game since Soul Calibur II (GCN). After playing Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, I felt like it was a game I could dive into. I've played various fighting games between SCII and SIGN, but I haven't felt like spending time with any of them.

Sol Badguy and Sin Kiske (Tutorial Mode)

Unfortunately, while it is the case that I enjoyed the game enough to play more and improve at it, I read that the sequel and its DLC, Xrd -REVELATOR- and REV 2 make several key changes to gameplay and so essentially everybody opts to play REV 2 over SIGN.* As such, the remaining reason to own SIGN would be for the story. However, the story can easily be found and viewed independent of the game (e.g., YouTube). Of course, if the most of the move lists remain the same, I could still look to learn a character on SIGN while waiting for REVELATOR and REV 2 to go on sale.**

Overall, I enjoyed being exposed to the various battle systems in Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. And while I have not played REVELATOR and/or REV 2, I've read enough to assume it's better than SIGN. As such, I would recommend REVELATOR to anyone who enjoys fighting games and is looking for a fighting game that provides the players with options regarding playstyle and fighting systems.

*A the time of this post, the daily player count for SIGN in 2019 was around 10 and the occasional spike up to the 30s (according to steamdb.info). In contrast, REVELATOR hovered around 200 with a recent spike in the 500s (after the Free Weekend and Steam Sale**) - maintaining the ratio of popularity (between 1 to 15 and 1 to 20).
**Apparently REVELATOR and REV 2 were recently 75% off, but I missed it; they were $7.49 and $4.74, respectively.

Animal Super Squad (PC) (2018)

Overview: A physics-based platformer.

Ruthie the chicken wearing a rastacap riding the Flush Master

20190807:
Today I continued my goal of breaking even on my Humble Bundle purchases; I'm currently trying to break even with the Yogscast Jingle Jam 2018 bundle. While the bundle consists of about 70 games, many of them are obscure or have a low all-time sale price or don't immediately appeal to me. As with the case of Animal Super Squad, I mainly base my initial impression of a game on it's current Steam ratings and/or reviews. If I get a good impression, then I'll blindly try the game out and see if I enjoy it. In the case of Animal Super Squad, I ultimately did enjoy it to some extent.

Setup: Keyboard.

Steam Game Time: 90 minutes

Ethan the sloth wearing a banana hat

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Casual, yet reasonably challenging
+ Fun level design
+ Amusing
+ Learning is built into the level design

Neutral:
~ Interesting that the game doesn't have an in-level timer, because this type of game lends itself to being timed

Ruthie wearing a fez riding the Bike+Kopter

Minor Con:
- There was one part in a level where I got stuck in a big barrel (even after resetting to the checkpoint) and couldn't figure out why; I still don't know for certain but at one point I managed to get past the big barrel (if I were to guess, then I was able to pass the barrel by ditching the vehicle).

Summary:
I was initially unimpressed by the feel of the game, but the gameplay experience grew on me. I started to enjoy the variety of obstacles which the game threw my way. However, I was only driven to play all the main levels (a total of 10) in the first area, Boulogner Forest.

Overall, it's a game worth trying out and likely one of the stronger offerings in the Yogscast Jingle Jam 2018 bundle.

Westerado: Double Barreled (PC) (2015)

Overview: A 2D pixel Western adventure game.

20190807:
Today I tried playing Westerado, but I hardly got 15 minutes into the game before I felt sleepy and had to stop. I had to stop, because I was tired, independent of the game's ability to keep me entertained. With that being said, after I took a nap, I didn't feel motivated to resume the game.

Why, hello... ladies... and gentlemen.

Steam Game Time: 15 minutes

Cube Link (PC) (2017)

Overview: A 3D puzzle game where the goal of each level is to connect pairs of colored squares with corresponding colored paths.

20190806:
As part of my goal of breaking even on my Humble Bundle purchases, today I played Cube Link, a game I acquired as part of the Yogscast Jingle Jam 2018 bundle.

Setup: 1920 x 1200. Windowed. Fantastic.

Gameplay Log:
First sort of challenging puzzle: Level 18. 3 minutes to solve. 6:15 to 9:33
Medium difficulty: Level 22. 2.5 minutes to solve. 13:30 to 15:49
Medium difficulty, piqued my interest: Level 26. 2.5 minutes to solve. 18:49 to 21:26
Hard difficulty, part luck, part trial-and-error: Level 28. 10 minutes to solve. 23:20 to 33:16
Completed level 32 and was ready to call it a night, but then I realized there are 40 levels and I was close to a milestone (achievement at level 35).
Insane difficulty: Level 37. 40 minutes to solve. 57:23 to 1:37:46

Steam Game Time: 105 minutes

20190807:
Finished the last three levels.

Gameplay Log:
Likely insane difficulty made hard difficulty by using "pen and paper" (OpenOffice Calc) to help sort thoughts: Level 38. 35 minutes to solve.

Steam Game Time: 2.5 hours (total game time) / 0.7 hours (session game time)

Thoughts:
Pro:
+ Decent concept/challenge for sale price

Neutral:
~ 40 levels
~ Geometrically interesting

Cons:
- Difficulty of puzzles not well balanced
- Colors used are too similar

Summary:
Overall, the difficulty of the puzzles could have used some tweaking and/or playtesting. A reasonable game if bought for sale.

The Escapists (PC) (2015)

Overview: Live in a prison and do what it takes to escape.

20190805:
Today I played The Escapists which I acquired in the Humble Team17 Bundle.

Meet Rabbit.

Gameplay Log:
Played the tutorial.
Playing the first level.
Learning what the heck is going on. For example, how to complete favors.
At the end of this long exploration, I learned how to correctly use the screwdriver. Though I got caught with an open vent.
After this escape attempt, I looked at the leaderboards and saw many top places finishing on Day 1. As such, I started a new save where I tried to quickly get the screwdriver and escape. However, it was getting late and I had to stop playing before I could make the attempt.
Note: crafting recipes I found in my other save file carried over to this save file.

Things I learned as I played:
The first thing a player should do is pause and read all the topics in the help menu. I didn't realize so much information was tucked away here. It's not a comprehensive list of topics, but it's helpful.

Lunch Time (eat and reduce fatigue)

One of the top actions is searching desks for common favor items (e.g., DVD, magazine, floss, etc.)
If the favor is to retrieve an item from another character, that item may either be in the person's desk (in his cell) or on that person (requiring the player to loot that character, see next). The favor is complete when the item is clicked on.
Loot characters by either beating them up personally or wait until someone else beats them up.
If the favor is to create a distraction, then what worked for me is to attack a guard and run around hoping I don't get beaten. A safeguard is to not have any valuables (red items) on you, just in case you get taken out.
In general, the player can save money by finding weapons or looting weapons from other characters.
While possibly not necessary for the first level, a useful action is to build up strength (followed by recouping energy: shower, eat, sleep). Intelligence (see next) might be useful in later levels.
Intelligence seems to mainly come into play as a crafting requirement (for crafting, see next)
At first I didn't encounter any of the supposed "Crafting Notes" that were said to be found in the game. However, I eventually began encountering them; sometimes they showed up as a sale item or more rarely in a desk.
From what I could tell, the NPCs switch available favors and sell items approximately every schedule unit (e.g., free time, exercise time, lunch time).

Desk Full of Items

Steam Game Time: 3.3 hours

20190806:
Today I returned to try and escape this first level, picking up from my first save. Unfortunately, after an hour of trying, I gave up. Note that for some reason, I had a strong desire to play this game organically. While at times this made the game fun, it also had a way of making the game too frustrating. This, however, made me wonder. The game does very little outside of the tutorial to provide the player with help on how to escape. Putting the pieces together, this is intentional. There are not many levels and the slow discovery of new crafting recipes is part of the fun. With that being said, I did not make any attempt to discover crafting recipes on my own. Perhaps that was where I went wrong.

If I should return to this game, then as a note to myself, I should try and discover how to make some of the crafting ingredients.

Gameplay Log:
Prior to playing today, I looked at a couple of articles from the Escapists Wiki: Razor Blade, Knuckle Duster, Comb Blade, Comb Shiv, Whip, Bed Dummy, Pillow
Played. Stop playing.
Watched two speedruns.

Noooo! Not solitary!

Steam Game Time: 4.3 hours (total game time) / 1.0 hours (session game time)

Thoughts:
Pro:
+ Play value - from what I've gathered, there are multiple ways to escape; aside from escaping, living the prison life is fun

Neutral:
~ Game takes a hands-off approach to how the game work; this would be characteristic of games with crafting and arguably extends the life of the game

Running from a guard (creating a distraction during Evening Rollcall)

Cons:
- Despite the hands-off approach, some information is tucked away in the help section; developers should seek to balance frustration and discover
- Resolution of actions can be unclear; for example, during my play of the first level, and despite the fact that it was part of the tutorial, I used the screwdriver on the vent, but didn't realize I had to use it multiple times (i.e., the vent wasn't open and I couldn't figure out why I couldn't enter the vents); as another example, reasons for getting caught are not conveyed to the player

Summary:
I attempted to play the game by cutting myself off from information not found in the game itself and that made even the easy level difficult. With that being said, I got caught up with the prison life. I found myself getting smarter (browsing the internet) and stronger (lifting weights), beating up the guards and inmates, and fulfilling favors. I built up income and lost sight of the ultimate goal: escaping. In part because escaping was made difficult. Just let me explore the vents without getting caught! This all reminded me of the movie The Shawshank Redemption (1994).

GoNNER (PC) (2016)

Overview: A 2D platformer and shooter rogue-like.

20190804:
I obtained this game from the Humble Caffeine Bundle and decided to play this game in order to break even on my purchase of the bundle.

Setup: Changed resolution to 2560 x 1440.

Steam Game Time: 35 minutes

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Friendly tutorial
+ Randomly-generated levels keeps the game fresh

Neutral:
~ Difficult

~ Rogue-like
~ Game requires improvement through trial-and-error

Minor Con:
- Not all the mechanics are explained in the tutorial (such as jumping on enemies to kill them)

Cons:
- Sometimes dying is a pain

Summary:
Personally, I'm not a fan of the difficulty of GoNNER. In particular, I don't find joy in adapting to the randomly generated levels. In general, I can't think of a rogue-like which I enjoyed enough to spend countless hours playing it.* With that being said, I could imagine players enjoying what GoNNER has to offer.

*I thought perhaps Rogue Legacy (PC) (2013), but it turns out I only played that game for 2.3 hours.
