Today I played this game as part of the Steam Spring Cleaning Event. Unfortunately, although I was interested by the Metroidvania genre, I was turned off by the retro game mechanics (in particular, the constricted jump movement).

Assetto Corsa (PC) (2014)

Overview: A realistic racing game.

20190527:
This game was free to play during the Steam Spring Cleaning Event and the visuals in the game previews looked stunning. As such, I just had to give it a try. While I wanted to play the game with VR, I didn't have the time to spare to set-up my Oculus Rift, and so I simply played one of the levels in fullscreen (I also didn't have the time to set-up Nvidia Surround.


Setup: I edited the video and control options several times. My final control setup was using the mouse to steer and the mouse buttons to accelerate and decelerate.

First Impressions:
I played the first track in the campaign mode several times and spent most of the time getting used to accelerating and decelerating around the turns. After the short amount I spent playing this game, I wish I had a steering wheel and some pedals. With that being said, something was going on with the game menu.

In effort to help break even on my Yogscast Jingle Jam 2018 bundle purchase,* I decided to put some more time into the game. On the one hand, I was playing and would have continued playing, but my wife came home and so I stopped playing to help put away groceries. On the other hand, after I finished putting away groceries, I had no strong feeling to resume the game. On that note, if it weren't for the effort to break even on the bundle, then I might not have revisited the game.

Setup: Xbox Controller.

*In general, I'm attempting to break even on most of my Humble Bundle purchases, starting from the most recent purchase and working my way backwards. The Yogscast Jingle Jam 2018 will be the ninth such bundle.

Thoughts:
Pro:
+ Game mechanics: in addition to standard platformer controls there is phase shift, slow time, and dash


Neutral:
~ Game mechanics are difficult to master

Minor Con:
- On the level select screen the worm winds left and right down the screen, but the levels read left to right down the screen. That is, instead of 1 2 3 4 | 8 7 6 5 | 9 10 11 12 | ..., the levels are 1 2 3 4 | 5 6 7 8 | 9 10 11 12.

Cons:
- Plot is not as interesting as Super Meat Boy
- Not addicting
- The game is a series of levels, each of which is broken down into four parts; I'm not sure what purpose this serves, but it could be the reason that I personally find the game not addicting: I lack motivation to replay a "level" because it means I'd have to replay and perfect all four parts. Interestingly, if the developers had combined all four parts into a single level, then I believe the game would have a better pace/flow

Overall, my sentiments for Slime-san fall neutral. I neither love the game (have a strong desire to play it) nor hate the game (I'm willing to play it). I find the mechanics fun, though sometimes they feel as if they could have used a little fine-tuning. Finally,

Eufloria (PC) (2009)

Overview: A strategy game where the player expands and colonizes space using plants.

Today I played Eufloria HD as part of the Steam Spring Cleaning Event "Blast from the Past": "Play [one of] the first game[s] you added to your Steam account. If you completed this task last year, play the second game on your Steam account."* Looking at a thread detailing the changes from Eufloria to Eufloria HD, I decided to classify Eufloria HD (PC) (2014) under Eufloria (PC) (2009).

*There was a choice of five titles: Iron Grip: Warlord, Eufloria, Doc Clock, VVVVVV, and Eufloria HD.



Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Relaxing music; relaxing gameplay
+ The basics of the game are spread across several levels; easy to digest game mechanics
+ Calming and beautiful art style

Neutral:
~ The game doesn't allow for selecting which plants to send from a planet (when a planet has plants which originated from various planets); the player must take this into account and behave accordingly (when trying to be efficient).

Summary:
This game is surprisingly relaxing considering the primary objective is to colonize other planets.

20240418:
I decided to try and play Eufloria (since technically it is the game to play based on my current methodology of going through my backlog). While i was able to load a save file which had the first ten levels completed, I went ahead and replayed the first three levels to refresh on the idea of the gameplay. Afterwards I tried to jump into the eleventh level. Unfortunately, I felt overwhelmed with trying to come up with the appropriate strategy and I didn't quite understand the defenses in place on the enemy asteroids. Overall, I can see the game being fun, but I definitely lack the patience for such an RTS. Note, however, that it's possible I would enjoy Eufloria HD (the slow pace of Eufloria is initially not bad but can grow to become mildly annoying.

Overall, I'd give Eufloria a 3.0 out of 5.

The Fall (PC) (2014)

Overview: You are an artificial intelligence within a combat suit seeking medical attention for your user. Solve puzzles as you journey through a dark and atmospheric story.



20190526:
I played this game today as part of the Steam Spring Cleaning Event "Clear the Backlog."

Setup: Xbox controller (note: the experience was not good)

Gameplay Log:
AM Hours Session: (45 minutes)
I was stuck and looked at a walkthrough: have the elevator go up, but don't take it and drop down.
After exploring this new area, I became stuck again and decided that I had it with the game. So much so that in my frustration I just had to look at a walkthrough to figure out what I had missed before going to sleep.

Morning Session: (45 minutes)
In the morning I logged into my computer only to realize the game was still on. Although I didn't have an optimal experience with the game, I decided to play some more using the information I read before going to bed last night: catch the dripping blood with the pan.
The action mechanism in this game feels clunky (at least with a controller)


As the player character goes up the elevator (after gaining camouflage), I continued to think about the flaw of giving an A.I. the ability to override systems on the premise of saving its user. As I mentioned earlier, the override should revert when the user is no longer in danger. How does one prevent loopholes in what the system determines as saving one's user? Of course, this is intended behavior when the user is in danger, but what happens when a perfectly functioning human has his/her suit overrode by his/her A.I.?
Cool, this Administrator has achieved sentience, though apparently he still has to perform his basic functions.
I played until I entered the door for submission to testing.
After closing the game I read the plot summary on Wikipedia. Part of the ending surprised me and I almost want to play the game simply because I want to see it play out before my eyes.

Actual Game Time: 90 minutes

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Great story
+ One of the best voice acting I've ever encountered


Neutral:
~ Okay graphics

Cons:
- Terrible to play with an Xbox controller; haven't tried keyboard and mouse (a Steam controller might be sufficient)
- My inability to use the controller resulted in a disjointed experience when it came to the action (shooting) portions of the game
- The way in which clues are hidden (the player has to have the flashlight shining on an object in order to investigate it) makes them easy to miss

Summary:
Although I enjoyed the story, I had a less than optimal gameplay experience. I might consider trying to play the game with a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller.

Trick & Treat (PC) (2016)

Overview: A horror adventure game which takes place in a mysterious castle on Halloween.

This game was one of the random games chosen for the Steam Spring Cleaning Event "Spin Cycle." I was in the mood to give it a try and the caution about jump scares didn't phase me.

~ Don't press F12. I pressed F12 to take a screenshot and the game reset. Luckily I was barely into the game when this happened. Apparently the developers warn players about this in the "About this Game" section of the Steam store page, but surely they can't expect players to have read that.


Minor Con:
- The game takes a long time to divulge the name of the protagonist (for no reason other than perhaps oversight); I was calling her "Pumpkinhead" until eventually I learned her name was Amelia.

Cons:
- The game often had the problem of feeling too slow
- Some puzzle elements felt obscure, perhaps the reason for the previous con
- The main music doesn't loop throughout the castle.

*I'm not a fan of watching horror movies or playing horror games, so my ability to tolerate the amount of horror from this game is what is meant here by "Reasonably scary"



Summary:
Although the game has it's shortcomings, it is worth noting that it's a good game with respect to being made using RPG Maker and being available for free. It should also be noted that I mainly had a problem with the pacing, which might not be a problem for every player, especially those who are well-versed with solving puzzles in RPGs.

Grim Dawn (PC) (2016)

Overview: An action RPG set in an apocalyptic fantasy world. The Aetherials have entered the world through openings called rift gates and are bringing an end to humanity.

Today I played Grim Dawn for the Steam Spring Cleaning Event "Speed Clean," where the task is to play one of seven games which are free-to-play. I would often think about my experience with Path of Exile (PoE), presumably because both are action RPGs. Of course, they have different premises and perhaps I am more fascinated with the premise and possible story with Grim Dawn. The first difference in gameplay which I noticed was that PoE allows for the map to be shown with transparency over the screen whereas Grim Dawn does not.

Setup: Moved all the graphics settings to max and turned all the optional settings on.

While waiting for Eufloria to download, I decided to play more Grim Dawn. Although the download finished before I even loaded this game up, I decided to go ahead and play some Grim Dawn anyways. As a side note, loading up the game satisfied the "Speed Clean" event (in other words, the same game can be used for "Speed Clean" over the four days).

Today would be my last day playing Grim Dawn. I had fun playing it. In fact, I would repeatedly get the itch to play the game afterwards. One regret I had was not trying out any of the augments.

Tips:
: The game has a panel that explains various game mechanics; I would highly recommend reading through it in pieces; I would arbitrarily recommend doing so prior to level 5
: One of the more important game mechanics I overlooked was choosing a class and level-up up skills. These essentially allow the player to deal more damage (via class-specific attacks)
: I would encourage using augments. I didn't, but I later realized that they drop with reasonable frequency and early game items don't matter so much (the player can recover the augment while losing the item via the Inventor's apprentice Darlet)
: Can rotate the camera angle. Though I personally will return the camera angle back to "default": North on the map (N) pointing towards the top of the screen.

~ Enemies don't respawn
~ Slow pace

Cons:
- Mechanics are tucked away; the game should encourage players to explore certain mechanics through quests (anecdotally, I didn't know about choosing a class and level skills until four and a half hours into the game*)
- No "flash" for movement
- Most, possibly all, spells and attacks are single target; occasionally makes for unsatisfying play (I mainly compensated by playing Panetti's Replicating Missile).
- Lacks a visual gear option

Summary:
From my own experience with action RPGs, I would mainly draw comparisons to Path of Exile (PoE) and Torchlight II. Among the three games, I had the most enjoyable experience with Torchlight II. While I used an application to clone items which reduced the grinding and allowed me to enjoy destroying enemies, I would also praise the game for it's straightforward game mechanics. On the opposite extreme is PoE whose weapons slots allow for linking gems and whose skill tree is absolutely overwhelming for a beginner. With respect to complexity, Grim Dawn falls right between the two games: a class-skill system comparable to that in Torchlight II and a passive skill system ("Devotion") which provides depth but more simple than that in PoE.

Unfortunately, the game failed to deliver itself. First, I didn't even know about the class-skill system until after I played the game for four hours. Second, I didn't realize that certain Augments allow the player to use spells. Both of these mechanics could have been forced on me, the player, at some point in the game.

I did, however, enjoy the game's theme and story.

Overall, I enjoyed the game enough that I would consider playing more at some point in the future. However, compared to PoE and Torchlight II, I would likely spend more time with either of those games over Grim Dawn.

Bridge Constructor Playground (PC) (2014)

Overview: Build bridges over valleys, canals, and rivers. Sequel to Bridge Constructor.*

*Although the game is a sequel, several reviews say its purpose is to serve as an intro to players new to the bridge building genre.



20191116 Comment:
I see screenshots on 20160225 from 2:57 AM to 3:33 AM (36 minutes) and (three) on 20190524 from 11:31 PM (first) to 11:53 PM (second and third) (22 minutes). Meanwhile, according to Steam I've played for 35 minutes and that I last played on 20190524. To top it all off, I unlocked three achievements on 20170116 and one achievement on 20190524; I suspect the three achievements on 20170116 are a result of playing on 20160225 while offline which registered when for whatever reason I ran the game on 20170116. In summary, I estimate the total game time as 1 hour: 36 minutes on 20160225 and 35 minutes on 20190524.

Today I put in a couple of hours into the game and the main thing I realized was the importance of using certain structures to relieve stress. In short, press play to identify components of the bridge which are under the most stress and determine the primary forces which are causing them. Then build something which will counter the forces identified.

I solved Material Constraints for Key Mahooti Bridge 4 by implementing a strategy I realized earlier today: Add a bunch of excess joints. For example instead of a simple \/ coming from a single vertex, one can do \\|//. In coordinate form, where the vertex is (0, 0), then the one can extend wood beams out to (-2, 4), (-1, 4), (0, 4), (1, 4), and (2, 4). In one puzzle, I had those beams as well as (-2, 2), (2, 2), (3, 2), and (4, 2).


Completed all the levels with Material Constraints. [Edit: I thought I got Material Constraints for Northern Reef Bridge 8 but in actuality I spent too much money.]
I was close to giving up on Money Saver for Tutoria Bridge 5 but then came back and solved it.

Give up on Money Saver for Northern Reef Bridge 5, 7, and 8. (Being sleepy certainly doesn't help.)

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Instruction helpful for beginners
+ Visualization of the load is neat and useful

Neutral:
~ The physics is just passive; there's no instruction on how to distribute stress and load which can potentially make the game difficult for the average player

Minor Cons:
- No confirmation to override a previously saved layout
- No fast forward button; this might be a limitation of the engine they use to model the stress as the cars/truck pass the bridge.


- Sound option can only be toggled from main menu.
- No redo button (to pair with undo).
- I understand that I can just right click to remove an element but I think an eraser tool would be more transparent to a user

Summary:
In terms of difficulty, Bridge Constructor Playground is occasionally challenging. Explicitly, some of the levels have challenging side goals; that is, for a some of the levels, at least one of "Money Saver," "Safety First," or "Material Constraints" is requires some thought.

At the moment I don't know how the game compares to Bridge Constructor. I've read that it introduces certain gameplay mechanics to help out newer players. However, I find it odd that a game geared towards beginners lacks some of the minute details that a beginner player would expect (as mentioned in my list of minor cons).

I resumed this game today and found that I had completed all the levels. I had not, however, received all the badges for each level (missing at most the two budget constraint badges for each level). As such, I went through and tried to tackle levels with uncompleted badges.

Today I started identifying a pattern in solutions for low cost and safety. Generally low cost solutions require the road be wooden roads with the occasional metal roads where a road would break. The solution will almost surely use an upright metal posts with cables extending to anchor it and the roads around it. Once the low cost solution is established, the safety solution can be found by replacing the metal posts with a concrete column. The aforementioned template doesn't always work, especially because sometimes conditions prevent it from occurring. However, it is a good starting point.

By the end of today, I have all the medals from the first and third island, I have not revisited the fourth island, and I have all but one medal from the second island where the low cost medal for Bridge 8 alludes me. The budget for that medal is 23000 and the closest I've come with a working bridge is 23050.

By the end of today, I have all the medals except for three: the low cost medal for Bridge 8 on the second island (I did not try it today), the low cost medal & safety medal for Bridge 7 on the fourth island.

I ended the session attempting the "Storm Warning" achievement: "A vehicle flew at least 5 grid units into the air." I eventually achieved it with some luck. Running the same layout again resulted in different results. This reminds me that one of the badges I got was achieved by similar variation in the physics. In other words, there were some runs where the bridge broke and the trucks didn't make it and there was one run where the bridge broke or was breaking and the trucks just barely made it. In any case, I did "Storm Warning" with cars.

Tackled low cost medal for Bridge 8 on the second island and I was inspired by a work in progress solution for Bridge 7 on the fourth island from yesterday. I was able to solve it! Solution: the solution involves using two metal posts leaning inwards to support under the bridge from which two metal posts come up
Return to Bridge 7 on the fourth island. Struggling.
| Very tempted to look up a solution. Was at the top of such a guide. Decided not to. However, I think I should take a break from the game.

Summary:
While I had gone back to complete the game, I'm not sure how I feel about the game. I found myself implementing the same strategy over and over, so despite the different levels, the game felt repetitive.

Just Dance Now (Android) (2014)

Overview: An app-based entry to the Just Dance series.

Setup:
The FAQ on the Just Dance Now website says the following are needed to play the game:
1- The Just Dance Now app on your smartphone which will be used as a controller.
2- An internet-connected screen (such as your PC, Mac, tablet, Apple TV, or a TV with a casting device).

20181219:
I've played Just Dance Now for free a couple times now and my phone disconnecting from the game while I'm playing is a problem I commonly encounter. It's annoying! Especially when I'm scoring well.

Gameplay Log:
I watched the YouTube video for "Gentleman - ALTERNATE."
Today I scored 11007 on "Gentleman - ALTERNATE" even though I disconnected! My goodness.
I changed the sleep settings on my phone to 10 minutes.
I watched the YouTube video for "Swish Swish."
I previously played "Swish Swish" and my phone disconnected so I only got a low score (1363). Today I played it and my phone switched to the camera app during the game.

Today was my first day subscribing to Just Dance Now. I did it because the game gives me exercise. But I stopped playing Just Dance 2019.

20191222 Comment:
Starting with 20190520, I started keeping track of the songs I played. By today, I played 203 tracks which is just under 1 song a day (217 days have passed). Unfortunately, this technically means I could save money by playing for free at a rate of 2 songs a day (non-subscribers on average receive 1 song per day; thus my wife and I would get to play an average of 2 songs per day). Of course the real solution is that I have to play (and exercise) more consistently. Assuming I play ten songs a day for the remaining five months of my subscription, I would average about 4.7 songs a day across the duration of the subscription.

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Simple to set up
+ Unlimited number of players can join a game.
+ Song list grows at a steady rate

BIGBANG - "Bang Bang Bang" (Extreme Version/Solo)

Neutral:
~ I wish the game had a more stream friendly design.
~ Doesn't require a console to play

Cons:
- Certainly more bugged than the console version (this includes phone disconnection, occasional lag, error in song choice, and error in score being saved)
- Having to use the phone is less secure than using the Wii remote with a strap.
- The UI experience isn't the best; for example, while I do like keeping a list of favorites, the game keeps playing the first song from my favorites list; my expectation is that song selection should start from where I last left off (with respect to a session)
- Non-subscription can be a pain (e.g., I've had experiences where there was an error with a song and I lost my free play; it feels like putting a quarter into an arcade machine but not being able to play); understandably they want people to pay, but a more feel-good non-subscription system would have a selection of free songs that don't require coins and/or a way to earn coins.

Summary:
Although the game has numerous problems, I enjoy it. Perhaps the developers figure it works well enough. However, the lack of polish does make me consider not renewing my subscription when it's over. Instead, I would opt to exercise in other ways.


On a different note, I feel the Just Dance series is most fun with a group of four and I currently don't have a circle of friends that would be interested in playing the game.

Back to Bed (PC) (2014)

Overview: Bob is a sleepwalker and turns clockwise when a wall or apple (movable in-game object) is in front of him. Guide Bob back to bed.

Today I continued my quest to play an average of one new game a day. The next game on my Recommended By Filter category was Back to Bed. I had no idea what the game was about and was pleased to have learned it was a puzzle game. Unfortunately, approximately forty minutes out of the hour I spent playing the game was bland.

Great art design!

I completed the first twenty-eight levels and was stuck on the twenty-ninth level. (~64 minutes)
I got the fish on the twenty-ninth level but I didn't know how to use it.

Pro:
+ Levels look cool; great art design

Neutral:
~ Some levels have solutions which require fast reflexes

Cons:
- Fails to make use of Escher-like art in an interesting way; the perspective is used as a satisfying part of the puzzles in about three to five of the thirty levels
- Boring, repetitive, lackluster
- Failure to maintain a flow of difficulty

After beating the game, unlock Nightmare mode which requires directing Bob to collect keys.

- The Nightmare Mode could have been converted the core gameplay; even then, the difficulty of Nightmare Mode was not high

Summary:
The basic concept of the game seemed promising, but the game failed to produce any challenging variations from each basic variation of the game. In particular, the levels generally look complicated, but offer no additional difficulty.

Overall, I wish the developers had put more thought into the puzzle design of the game. It's truly a waste of art. I would not recommend the game to anyone looking for a challenge.

League of Legends - Yuumi

Yuumi was released on live recently (May 13) but I haven't been playing League of Legends due to the amount of time it takes to play a match. However, as a support main, I definitely wanted to check out the new champion.

After four games in co-op vs. AI, I had the following impressions:

Pros:
+ Strong with the right bruisers or tanks; it's like equipping a champion with a shield (passive), gun (Q), and replenishing health (E).
+ Ultimate has a reasonable cooldown
+ Q is good for
+ Share recall (similar to Rakan recalling with Xayah) and teleport.


Neutral:
~ My understanding is that in a teamfight, Yuumi should almost surely be jumping from champion to champion (and rarely ever off on her own)
: 1) shield tank while also throwing out poke with Q
: 2) keep ADC at full health and speed boost with E
~ Outside a teamfight, Yuumi can help assassins do their job plus make it out alive with her shield (passive) plus her heal and speed boost (E); I guess throwing in one or two Q's wouldn't hurt

Cons:
- No AOE (area of effect) damage.
- Essentially no CC (crowd control): her Q slows if it's traveled for long enough.
- Weak laning phase with many ADC (probably does well with hard-engage ADC like Kaisa)

Play Potential:
~ Switching from champion to champion to make optimal use of her ultimate seems like one of the biggest plays Yuumi can make. In particular, it takes three successful strikes to root an enemy, and so if the target enemy moves, so must Yuumi.

Surviving Mars (PC) (2018)

Overview: Colonize Mars. City building simulation game.

20190517:
This game was available on Steam for a free weekend and so I decided to give it a try. I played two out of five tutorials before I got bored. As such, I grudgingly decided to jump straight into the game. For better or worse, my little one was beginning to stir from his sleep and I decided to stop playing.


Steam Game Time: 51 minutes*

*Actual game time is around 30 minutes.

First Impressions:
I was happy that the game included a tutorial section, but I felt overwhelmed by the fact that there were five tutorials. In fact, I only played two tutorials and both contained too much information to remember.

I believe there are many superior options. For example, the game could have had a campaign mode for first-time players which teaches players how to play by slowly unlocking new options and buildings as the player progresses. In the case of Surviving Mars, the player would first only be able to drop a spaceship.


In any case, I rarely play city-building simulations and today I lacked the patience to learn how to play Surviving Mars.

Ending on a positive note, I enjoyed the graphics and my impression was that the game has a lot of depth.

80 Days (PC) (2015)

Overview: Phileas Fogg has taken a wager to go around the world in just 80 days! The player is his valet, Passepartout, and the story is told by him. It's up to the player to discover routes, buy and sell the proper goods, and choose which routes to take. In fact, time is essentially always ticking, and so the player should make his/her choices as quickly as possible!

Today I continued my quest to fulfill my quota of playing video games. Having trouble deciding on what game to play (despite having a partial methodology set-up), I decided to refer to my Recommended By Filter category and picked the first game on the list: 80 Days.

I was having fun with the game and would have continued playing, but being a father comes first and my little one needed me.

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Amazing storytelling
+ A sense of urgency created through the in-game clock

~ Some trial-and-error is required in order to refine one's strategy for future runs

Summary:
I've only played this game for less than an hour, but it's storytelling is mind-blowing! On the one hand, it's most definitely a game. On the other hand, it comes across as a book. In a way, it's practically a choose-your-own-adventure.

Now, I hardly ever read books, but I enjoyed reading the story being told by 80 Days. First, the game gives me a say in how the story evolves. Second, reading the different possible prompts helps stimulate my imagination. It is a different experience than simply reading a book.

Choose which routes to take

Overall, I would highly recommend this game to all players who enjoy games with good stories.

Mighty No. 9 (PC) (2016)

Overview: A spiritual successor to the Mega Man series.

20190514:
I was never a big fan of the original Mega Man series; I did, however, enjoy Mega Man X (SNES) (1993) and Mega Man Zero (GBA) (2002).*

Setup: Xbox Controller


Gameplay Log:
- Jumping into the game, we barely get to walk before we're interrupted. Prior to this, the game even said "Go!"
- Another interruption. We should be able to go through the dialogue faster.
- The game hides away mechanics in a Tips menu. [Thankfully I later had a viewer who helped me out with most of the game's mechanics, so I didn't have to tediously read.]
Mighty No. 1:
- I tried applying the reverse jump and alternate fire in-game, but they were difficult to utilize.
- Twice I died to a box that I thought I had to destroy. After the second time, I realized I could go over the box. [A weakness in game design, because the area above the box looked blocked off.
- I picked up a sparkly object and didn't know what it did. [It was a 1-UP]
- I complain about having to rewatch a cutscene. [I later learned cut scenes can be skipped by pressing start.]
LOL. Call warns about weak infrastructure after the first has already fallen. [Game design which easily frustrates first-time players.]
- *Every* tall tower in the background will fall.
- A viewer joined and recommended fighting Battalion first, because it gives the best weapon in the game.
Mighty No. 5:
- Changed number of lives to nine [Informed by viewer]
- I begin to feel as if I'm getting the hang of the game.
- I pick up the sparkly object and my viewer informs me it was an extra life.


Mighty No. 4:
- Battalion's power is OP [his shots take up energy, but absorbing enemies makes it a non-issue]
- Some dumb drop ledges in combination with instadeath electricity walls
Mighty No. 7:
- Dropping on the road is instadeath [annoying!!!]
- Brandish shows up and destroys some cars
Mighty No. 4:
- Stupid turbines. [Crouch dashes aren't used anywhere else in the game. Why force players to use them here and worse why require such extreme precision?]
Mighty No. 8:
- This stage is annoying.
- Use Brandish to deflect Shade's attacks.
- Get used to using hot keys to switch between Brandish and Battalion.
- I end the night here.

Shout out to TheNegativeIon for all the gameplay advice. The game most certainly would have been more frustrating and less enjoyable without it.



Tips:
- The option of having more lives per level (up to 9).
- Enemies can be killed with enough bullets. When I first started playing the game, I thought the only way to kill enemies was to dash into them after weakening them (part of the game's failure to convey it's mechanics to the player).
- Gain a heal-up by absorbing blue glowing enemies: AcXel Recover I.
- Beck can shoot very quickly. After playing the game, I watched part of a speedrun and learned that I was firing Beck's standard attack at a slow rate (approximately a third to a half the firing rate of the runner).
- Use the game options to set up to three powers to hotkeys; I'm not sure if more can be set when using the keyboard.
- Press start to skip a cut scene.

Steam Game Time: 3.2 hours

*I can't remember whether or not I played any of the sequels. I have a feeling I might have played Mega Man Zero 2.

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Unlimited dashing is fun (caveat: Beck experiences greater knockback when he's damaged while dashing)
+ Voice acting


Neutral:
~ The game has two alternate fires (1: jump back and fire, 2: jump back and turn) but when I first learned about them (via tips), I tried to use them and found them to be useless
~ Beck's absorption ability is different but can sometimes be shitty.

Cons:
- Explanation of game mechanics separated from the game itself; requires the first-time player to read and digest tips outside the game
- Poor pacing. Too much story.
- Enemies can be hard to see
- Ledges to grab can be hard to see; in one boss fight, I died only because I didn't see the ledges (luckily, my Twitch viewer filed me in)
- Unbalanced boss abilities
- Boss abilities not well-used in game levels
- Some poorly thought out level designs

Summary:
Many of the game's mechanics lack transparency and require the player to discover through the tips menu instead as part of the game. This is poor game design. Even so, certain powers and mechanics are less useful than others. More poor game design.


Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have someone help me avoid the frustrating parts of the game (or at least help me avoid making the same mistake twice). I would recommend other players who are interested in playing this game to seek some advice as well.

While the game has many failures, a player who puts the time into learning all the details of the mechanics and memorizing dangers that would frustrate a first-time player should have a lot of fun replaying levels. In particular, this game is probably fun to speedrun.

Fans of the classic Mega Man series should consider playing Mighty No. 9, but should keep in mind that the game fails to imitate the success of the original series and the core attack mechanic is different.

Overall, I would recommend giving the game a chance, and if you do, then start by watching five to ten minutes of a speedrun. I know it sounds silly, but it's probably the best way to convert a game that receives mixed reviews into a game that could receive mostly positive reviews.
