Overview: 3D platformer where one of the core mechancis is copy and pasting textures from one object to another.
20250302:
Setup: Controller.
Steam Game Time: 30 minutes
First Impressions:
Loading up the game, I found the game looked visually appealing with a colorful palette. Soon after the intro, I learned that one of the overarching game designs is similar to Super Mario 64 (enter a level and collect stars). However, besides some levels locked behind doors, it seems a good chunk of gameplay is scattered throughout the world for a more open world approach to collecting stars.
While collecting stars and platforming is shared by the two games, Ruffy adds a core gameplay mechanic: the ability to swap out a target with a source (it's called swap but it's more like copy and paste). In most cases, this means swapping the texture of one object with that of another object. In the tutorial, the player is taught to transform the waterful into climbable leaves by using this ability.
Initially disorienting is that Ruffy (and all the characters) are 2D-looking characters in a 3D-looking world (i.e., the characters don't have a thickness. Demo Rating: 4.0 out of 5
