Wooden Sen'SeY (PC) (2012)

Overview: An action-platformer where you play as a ninja.

20180223:
I played the first four levels before being bored.

An upward thrust.

Setup: Logitech F310 Controller.

Game Time: 45 minutes (offline)

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ A variety of gameplay mechanics. Introduced one by one.

Neutral:
~ Has the ingredients for speedruns. In fact, it seems to encourage replay.

First level completed!

Cons:
- Boring
- Controls feel clunky.
- Simple, unappealing graphics and character models.

Summary:
The main campaign fell short of being fun.

Lumino City (PC) (2014)

Overview: A point-and-click adventure which is a direct sequel to Lume (2011). Both games feature an environment which has been hand-crafted.

The Crane

20180223 Noon Hours:
Ada and I played Lumino City today and we made progress up to The Lightwell.

Starting @ 11:21AM PT
Game Time: 97 minutes (Offline)

20180223 Evening Hours:
After settling down at our Airbnb, Ada and I decided to play some more. We started by redoing The Lightwell.*

The Captain

Steam Game Time: 79 minutes (Session Game Time)
Total Game Time: 176 minutes

*I learned on 20180301 that the reason I had to replay the level was because I clicked on the chapter icon instead of clicking "Resume" (which was obscured by the chapter icons).

20180301:
The rains caused the power to go out and so Ada and I decided to play some Lumino City.

A puzzle in The Photographer

We started by redoing The Captain (potatoes/bird/water tank/rowing). With help of a hint from the handymanual which Lumi finds at the start of the game, Ada figured out how to obtain the salt.

Starting @ 10:38PM PT (Ending @ 20180302 12:23AM PT)
Game Time: 45 minutes (Session Game Time)
Total Game Time: 221 minutes (or approximately 3.7 hours) = 79 minutes (Steam) + 142 minutes (Offline)

20180327:
Today Ada and I completed Lumino City!

A puzzle in The Diner

For the Spinner House, we were stuck on what to do with the hammer and nails. Eventually we looked up the solution in the Handy Manual and the solution was a little silly. My criticism has to deal with Lume's height. Thinking about it now, Lume's ability to reach and jump is inconsistent throughout the game, and so perhaps it should have come to less of a surprise.

After the Spinner House, there was a puzzle with a circuit board and while we were able to solve it, we didn't completely understand the reason behind some of the pairings. I tried looking the solution up in the Handy Manual, but the hint for finding the page is (probably) wrong. I decided to revisit the puzzle after we completed the game. I manually went through the book and found the solution (on page 777), but it was just a solution with a poor hint. There was no explanation for the different pairings. Regardless, we subsequently managed to figure out a couple of the mysterious pairings, but we were still left without the reasoning behind the pairs matched with the arrows (down 2 and up 1 down 3). Looking for answers, I found a Steam thread where some users explained that down means "subtract one" and up means "add one".

The Spinner House

Steam Game Time: 3.0 hours (Session Game Time)
Total Game Time: 6.7 hours = 4.4 hours (Steam) + 2.3 hours (Offline)

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Artistic and gorgeous. The world of Lumino City is hand-crafted.
+ A larger and more fulfilling experience compared to Lume; makes sense, because my impression was that Lume intentionally acts as a teaser to Lumino City.

A puzzle in The Captain.

Neutral:
~ Puzzles have a good variety of difficulty.

Summary:
Ever since I played and completed Lume (2011), I couldn't wait to play the original.

The hand-crafted background and characters give Lumino City a charming vibe which outweighs any minor flaws that may exist in the games's puzzles. I would highly recommend the game to fans of point-and-click adventures. However, I would first recommend players start with Lume, which is a short game, and serves as the premise to Lumino City.

100% Orange Juice (PC) (2013)

Overview: A digital board game featuring characters from various video games developed by Orange_Juice (Flying Red Barrel, QP Shooting, SUGURI, and Sora).

Game Mechanics:
On a high level, the game is a board game where the players must collect stars, fight enemies, and/or fight each other. Some spaces on the board result in drawing a card from a common deck which is composed of cards chosen by each player. Players should choose cards based on their stats and special.

Game Board

20180223:
I thought 100% Orange Juice was a visual novel and booted it up to play with Ada. However, we didn't have internet and so I couldn't load up the instruction guide (if I recall we were at Midway International Airport). This made it difficult to understand and we went on to play Lumino City instead.

Setup: We chose to play as the character QP. I don't remember what difficulty we chose.

Game Time: Approximately 15 minutes.

[20180317]

Battle

20180317:
Today I decided to play 100% Orange Juice.* Without an in-game tutorial, I was forced to read the instruction manuals.

Setup: I chose to play as the character QP.

I started with Campaign Mode, Original difficulty for two or three games and then I tried a couple games on Normal. Then at some point I tried playing a game under the Free Play mode.

Out of all the games I played during the three hours, I managed to win once.

Steam Game Time: 3.2 hours
Total Game Time: 3.45 hours

Creating a deck.

*It was sorted as "Overwhelmingly Positive" in my Steam library, but I didn't realize until drafting this post that it was now just rated as "Very Positive."

Thoughts:
Neutral:
~ The game's multiplayer mode may be more enjoyable

Cons:
- The RNG in this game makes it annoying. This is even true of Normal difficulty.
- No in-game tutorial.
- Unlocking content by collecting stars would be an absolute grind.

Unlocking Cards

Summary:
I gave this game a solid three hours trying to figure out if I was missing critical strategy. However, I felt like the game's randomness (RNG) made planning strategy difficult.

In contrast, consider the video board game series Mario Party which has some randomness through the dice rolls when moving about the board, but requires skill (with the mini-games) to gain an advantage. As such, even a player who is less skilled and wins less mini-games can win the game as a whole (due to luck), but theoretically he/she will win less often (over a large sample). In other words, luck plays about 10% in Mario Party. With 100% Orange Juice, I'm under the impression that luck plays about 80%.

Overall, I've played my share of board games and some require more luck than others. This game requires a lot of luck.

Pix the Cat (PC) (2015)

Overview: An arcade game whose game mechanics are a blend of Snake and Pac-Man. In an oversimplification, Pix must collect ducklings and drop them off without running into enemies or the train of ducklings which grows behind him (the train grows with every duckling collected and shortens with every duckling dropped off). Earn bonus points by collecting all the ducklings in a stage before dropping any of them off.

20180220:
Today I played Pix the Cat for the first time.

I'm on a role! Fever Time!

Setup: Keyboard

Game Time: 14 min (offline)

[20180315]

20180221 AM Hours:
Having only played for a short time earlier, Setup: Keyboard

Steam Game Time: 62 minutes

20180226 Part 1:
While traveling from the East Coast back to the West Coast, I played some Pix the Cat.

Total Game Time: 178 minutes

I managed to break a million points (one of the Steam Achievements).

Puzzle Mode

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Various modes, including a puzzle mode.
+ The main arcade mode is fast-paced, though sometimes it feels unbelievably fast.

Neutral:
~ Difficult to master.

Con:
- Improving at arcade mode is a repetitive process.

Another Puzzle

[20180315]

Summary:
Pix the Cat has a variety of modes to play and personally I enjoyed the puzzle mode. The arcade mode was also fun at first, but I didn't care to spend so much time replaying the same levels over and over just to improve my score. It's akin to replaying a shooter over and over, improving on getting further without dying and improving the combos.

In contrast, I could spend hours on games with shorter levels. Examples include Super Meat Boy, 10 Second Ninja, and The Adventures of Shuggy.

Oh no! I ran into my "tail."

But everybody's different. In particular, some people have a knack for playing and improving at shooters. So I'm sure there'll be a crowd of arcade players who will enjoy Pix the Cat's main arcade mode.

Note that puzzle lovers will have to play the main arcade mode in order to unlock the puzzle mode (800,000 points).

MURI (PC) (2013)

Overview: A retro platformer.

20180220:
I played MURI for the first time today. In part, because it was a smaller game and I was using my Zenbook.

Steam Game Time: ~19 minutes

Thoughts:
Neutral:
~ Retro, both stylistically and visually

Summary:
I didn't play the game long enough to understand it's intricacies, but I also wasn't interested enough to play it for that long.

20211009 Comment:
Steam thinks I played Muri for the first time on 20210902 and that I last played on 20211009 and a total of 4 minutes. I accidentally just launched the game. The above gameplay of 19 minutes isn't captured because that was offline.

Emily is Away (PC) (2015)

Overview: Emily is Away is a visual novel presented in the form of a series of AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) conversations.

20180220:
Today I played the game for the first time and finished all five chapters of the story.

Steam Game Time: 54 minutes

20200209:
Today I played to get all the remaining achievements.

Steps:
1) Open chapter 1 and enter a screen name.
2) A correct screen name will unlock an icon.
3) Get the corresponding achievement

Note that many icons can be unlocked, but only some have achievements.

Steam Game Time: 87 minutes (total game time)

The buddy list references other video games.

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Story-driven

Neutral:
~ Short
~ Nostalgic AIM Conversation

Summary:
Emily is Away is a short, simple, yet compelling game. While I initially didn't see why I should care for Emily at all, the game effectively created an interest and I finished it feeling helpless.

If you like games with good stories, then you should consider playing Emily is Away.

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill (PC) (2013)

Overview: The Typing of the Dead: Overkill is a typing-game adaptation of rail-shooter The House of the Dead: Overkill.

Varla Guns (left) and Candi Stryper (right)

I have spent most of my time in this game playing The Typing of the Dead, but also spent a little time repeatedly playing the first level of The House of the Dead: Overkill. Steam Achievements lay out the following progression with respect to the main story:
20140313 2219 Papa's Palace of Pain
20140313 2237 Naked Terror
20140313 2257 Ballistic Trauma
20140314 1341 Carny
20140314 1402 Creeping Flesh
20140314 1420 Pap's Palace of Pain (House of the Dead)
20140501 2251 Scream Train
20140501 2314 The Fetid Waters

Boss: Screamer

Steam Game Time: 5.9 hours total

20180210:
I haven't played this game in a while and decided to give it a spin. Unfortunately, the game ran and was working fine until I tried to change a graphics setting (I was trying to play on my ASUS ROG) and it wouldn't even load after the required restart. Troubleshooting, I went online and eventually fixed the problem by going into Nvidia panel: 3d settings > manage 3d settings > integrated graphics for Typing of the Dead: Overkill.

In any case, I played various levels and also finished the main story. The ending was anticlimatic.

Steam Game Time: 7.4 hours total

Boss: Nigel & Sebastian

20180219:
Prior to posting this entry, I decided to play a little bit more of this game.

Tip: I learned today that the player can press backspace to escape the current word. Progression will be lost, but sometimes this is helpful to fend against higher priority targets like a flying object or a closer undead.

Steam Game Time: 8.7 hours total

Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Hilarious characters/story
+ The House of the Dead: Overkill is included

Isaac Washington Jr. (left) and G (right).

Neutral:
~ Not a game to learn typing on. More of a game to improve or test typing skills in a fun setting. Note, however, that getting a high score is dependent on knowing which enemies should be targeted first (otherwise a combo could be lost regardless of the ability to type quickly).
~ Language and/or story is inappropriate for younger persons.
Con:
- Some elements of the original game don't translate well to the typing version. In particular, the boss fights (with no time constraints) do not feel difficult (Agent difficulty).

Summary:
I can type somewhere between 70 and 80 words per minute and find typing games to be a fun challenge and form of entertainment. It follows that I enjoyed playing The Typing of the Dead: Overkill.

References older SEGA arcade games Ghost Squad (2004), Thunder Blade (1987), and Space Harrier (1985).

Furthermore, the game's story was entertaining to watch (though may be inappropriate for children). In short, I would highly recommend the game to other fans of typing games.

Remark: The game might also appeal to fans of on-rails shooters since it includes The House of the Dead: Overkill, but playing with a mouse is less challenging than playing with a light gun / Wiimote.

Murdered: Soul Suspect (PC) (2014)

Overview: You're a police detective who's died and become a ghost (in Salem, Massachusetts). Something is keeping you from moving on. Use your ghost investigation powers to solve the mystery of your own death.

20180209:
Today I decided to play Murdered: Soul Suspect. I chose it by ordering my games on SteamDB by price and glancing down the list of games I have yet to play.

Detective Ronan O'Connor

I was enjoying the atmosphere of the game and the investigation/possession mechanic seemed promising. That is, until the game introduced these demons that can only be defeated from behind (with a quick time event). It felt like it was added just for the sake of difficulty.

Then, if that weren't bad enough, I eventually ran into a bug where I was stuck in a menu and not even alt+F4 worked. I manually closed the game from the taskbar.

Ronan talks with another ghost named Abigail.

Setup: Increased various visual settings. Keyboard / mouse.

Steam Game Time: 58 minutes

Thoughts:
Pro:
+ Promising premise / setup.

Ronan is somehow able to reveal Abigail's private drawings.

Neutral:
~ I'm not sure what I think about the investigation mechanic. It's kind of cool, yet sometimes unintuitive.

Cons:
- "Enemies" are annoying: I tried to sneak up on a demon, somehow got spotted and had to hide, which was stupidly simple yet tedious, and then had to try two to three more times. Was this part of the game necessary?

Ronan runs into a demon.

- Ran into a bug: can't exit clues menu. The number of users commenting in a Steam thread indicated it's prevalent. Possible solutions: 1) turn off v-sync, 2) don't use touchpad, 3) windowed mode instead of fullscreen, 4) don't alt-tab when playing in fullscreen, 5) use a controller

Summary:
I saw the trailer for this game a long time ago and thought it looked cool. Unfortunately, my actual gameplay experience did not match my expectation. Of course, I suppose it didn't help that the game bugged out and I got stuck in the game menu while playing.

The player must correctly interpret flashbacks for clues.

Yikes!!!

Game Time: ~ 2 hours 4 minutes (some time spent dozing off)

20180207 Part 1:
This game was fun. But I initially didn't take many notes. I had to go back and figure out which ending I unlocked and how I unlocked them.

Remark: There will be various observations made (especially from yesterday) which are not necessarily noted.

Game Log:
...
Steam Game Time: 9 minutes total
Steam Game Time: 14 minutes total

For convenience I combined almost all the UV light messages into one picture.

In some spare time outside the game, I decoded the numerical message. It turned out to be a a simple numeric substitution: A=1, B=2, etc.:
4 5 3 9 16 8 5 18 9 14 7
9 20
23 1 19
3 15 16 12 5 20 5 12 25
13 5 1 14 9 14 7 12 5 19 19
decodes to "DECIPHERING IT WAS COPLETELY MEANINGLESS."
Remark: The message is missing the letter "M".

Switch to the left unlocks numpad.
When the digital display is visible, inputs on the numpad will show up there instead of the monitor.
#13 Tentacle spikes. Entering Fibonacci sequence with numpad on the digital display.
123__|____0|1_345|6___0|_____
#21 Prison/Dystopia ending. The previous ending reveals a passport in the lower right: Papers, Please (PC) (2013). Deny entry to the mysterious person.
123__|____0|1_345|6___0|1____

More panels.

Note: I'm still waiting on where/how to input the missing sequence value of "#3) 1 11 21 _ 111221 312211: 1211. This is a sequence I learned in middle school. The next item in the sequence is determined by counting the consecutive digits in the previous sequence. Thus, we start with "one-1" -> 11. And that becomes "two-1" -> 21. And that is "one-2, one-1" -> 1211. I tried entering the numbers on the numpad without the digital display but nothing happened.

Steam Game Time: 34 minutes total

#18 Smashing the screen with the hammer revealed four symbols (hourglass, double squiggle, eye, key) and the game shuts down.
123_5|____0|1_345|6_8_0|1____
#5 Happy ending. Lighting those four symbols on the hieroglyphs board (turning the other symbols off).
123_5|____0|1_345|6_8_0|1____

Steam Game Time: 55 minutes total

20180207 Part 2:

Game Log:
I was trying to listen to the clicks - I thought it was Morse code - but they didn't seem to mean anything.
Is there importance to the order of the instructions (1243)?
In the second instruction, there's an extra B: "GRBB" instead of "GRAB".

And more panels.

Steam Game Time: 113 minutes total; Game Time: ~ 4 hours total

20180216 Part 1:
I resumed the game today but I didn't have much patience in the matter.

Game Log:
123_5|____0|1_345|6_8_0|1__4_ #24 I partially read the solution while looking for images of the UV map. Remark: I suppose I had the pieces but didn't make use of them. In any case, what I read was spell "DOT" in Morse. I still had to figure out how to input it: binary panel, 1 = long, 0 = short.

Steam Game Time: 2.4 hours total; Game Time: ~ 4.4 hours total

20180216 Part 2:
Reaching my limit on DIY, I tried to look for some hints.

Game Log:
Read Hint 1: "Look at the instruction poster again. Do you like math? I do, but even if you don't, even a small child can point out the difference between numbers and letters."
Result of Hint: Entered 8367 into the numpad unlocks 7 x 7 grid and numbers 1-4.

Scary...

Entered 1211 into the numbers 1-4 unlocks music pad.
123_5|___90|1_345|6_8_0|1__4_ #9 Eye/Portal into another Universe ending. Entered 1243 into the numbers 1-4
123_5|___90|12345|6_8_0|1__4_ #12 Meteorshower ending (Ghostbuster Sticker). Listening to music that plays. H H L M M L M H
Read Hint 2: "And I think EVIL is afoot. I just hope I don't have to MAKE an EVIL SIGN that's been there the whole time..."
12345|___90|12345|6_8_0|1__4_ #4 Scary lady on display. Read Solution: (Paraphrased) use the 7 x 7 grid to enter the star. 5 specific points. (1,4), (3,1), (3,7), (7,2), (7,6)
Four symbols shown during ending #4: hourglass, double squiggle, eye, key. The same as smashing the screen with the hammer.
Read Hint 3: Look for the math on the instruction poster. Specifically, power of.
Result of Hint: Entered 8232 into the numpad unlocks date input.* Starting date is 08:12:1984.
12345|6__90|12345|6_8_0|1__4_ #6 Prehistoric ending (Back to the Future* - Doc half a sticker). Hit back.
12345|67_90|12345|6_8_0|1__4_ #7 Future ending (Back to the Future* - Marty half a sticker). Hit back.
Read Hint 4: Following the picture of the colored buttons: "They spelt GRAB wrong in the instruction panel. That seems like a silly word to misspell."
12345|67890|12345|6_8_0|1__4_ #8 Upside down (Ying-Yang sticker) ending. Result of Hint: I had to think about it, and then realized that GRBB stood for Green Red Blue Blue.
Read Hint 5: (The hint explains how to interpret device behind the instructions.) The clicking devices behind the panel correspond to the computer time.
12345|67890|12345|678_0|1__4_ #17 Deathray ending (Death Star sticker). Result of Hint 5: I figured the printout is 6x4 so either it's four numbers or six numbers. Trying first four numbers on numpad. No good. Then six numbers with roman numerals. No good. Tried in reverse (bottom-up). Yay!

One of the endings (in the display).

Read Hint 6A: (paraphrase) The letter-numbers are coordinates for the red pad.
Result of Hint 6A: I tried all the combinations for B? and ?4 but it didn't work. I continued reading the guide and it turns out that the D4 has to be showing for the input to work.
Read Hint 6B: (paraphrase) Look at the stickers.
Read Solution 6B: Apparently one sticker says 42 and another says 00. [Oh, I read more of the hint and see it now.]
Result of Solution 6B: Entered 4020 into numpad.
Read Hint 6C: Ending of plane mini-game has a clue.
Result of Solution 6C: The letters Y R B B glitch.
12345|67890|12345|67890|1__4_ #19 Sandword ending (Sandworm sticker). Enter the color. Then place the diamond in. Press the button.
Read Hint 7: Press the button once and follow the arrows.
12345|67890|12345|67890|12_4_ #22 Divided ending (divided earth button). Result of Hint 7: Arrows end with 5x7. It's a game to switch all the lights to opposite. Trial-and-error.
Read Hint 8: Refers to one of the UV light messages: 0-23 | 1-4 | 2-1
12345|67890|12345|67890|1234_ #23 Rocket ending (spaceship button) Read Solution 8: Ah. That makes sense but I never would have thought to interpret the message that way: 2001.
Result of Solution 8: Three dials with the letters: V,E,N,C,J,SA,U,CH,PL,ME; TU,A,U,OO,UP,EN,RA,AR,RC,ER; RN,UR,N,US,ES,ON,RS,IT,TH,TO. I decided to use the planets (and Moon, Pluto) to eliminate most letters: C,CH; ER; ES,ON. They didn't work. Then I tried Pluto. And it worked! Ah. Right, because Pluto is the ninth in orbit with a question mark... Put key where it belongs.
12345|67890|12345|67890|12345 #25 Coffee ending.

Another ending (rocket ship).

Steam Game Time: 4.7 hours total; Game Time: ~ 6.7 hours total

*Remark: When seeing the date input. I immediately looked up Back to the Future date: October 26, 1985 is when Marty goes to the past. Then when I went back in time and got half the sticker, I couldn't tell who it was. It made sense when I saw the full sticker.
