So I played some of this game today and it was pretty fun. There was an instruction screen which went by too quickly for me, but I sort of got the gist of the game: build robots, collect energy, and fend for yourself against evil robots. Unfortunately, just as I was beginning to get into the grove of building my third or fourth robot, the game crashed.

While the game was beginning to be fun, I was also ready to move on to the next prototype.

Black Lake Prototype

I loved the atmosphere, aesthetics, and sensory mechanics. In fact, I loved everything about the game except for the annoying thorns (these weird enemy creatures which attack you, but you don't have any defense mechanism and the only solution is to walk away from them and hope they lose interest. Now, if one does catch up to you, then you just start from some predetermined previous checkpoint (located at the last clue you found). Similar to watching the end of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings, I was sad to reach the end of the Black Lake Prototype, because at that point, I was really hoping for more.

Hack'n'Slash Prototype

Today I played this weird action adventure game called Hack 'n' Slash. While strange at first, I eventually got the coolest ability ever, the ability to hack into enemies and make adjustments to them. For example, you can increase friendly fire damage or reduce an enemy's vision range.

Upon reaching the end of the prototype, I would have happily played more. In other words, I enjoyed Hack 'n' Slash, though not to the extent that I enjoyed Black Lake.

Happy Song Prototype

I guess this game is about looping music. The options aren't quite spelled out and the interface is a little confusing. I suppose in part this is because I was using keyboard and not a controller. In any case, even if this game was polished in terms of interface, the only thing it has going is the aesthetics of having monsters being animated. In terms of putting together some music, then I doubt it could contend with more serious applications. Again, I'm not sure of the intent, but compared to some of the other games I've encountered, I'm not impressed.

Spacebase DF-9 Prototype

Today I played some of this game. I sort of played for as long as I did hoping there'd be more.

Unfortunately, the gameplay so far was still buggy and perhaps the developers were only able to implement some of the intended features (such as job assignment).

Looking at the trailer of the finished and released version of the game, it's amazing to see the drastic difference between the prototype and the completed release.

The White Birch Prototype

After Spacebase DF-9, I loaded up The White Birch. While I encountered a terrible bug (I got stuck in one of the surfaces), the game is short and I just restarted the game.

Eventually I found myself at some claw device and couldn't figure out what to do. After a couple of minutes, I went to YouTube to find the answer. After learning the answer, I finished the game and got a butterfly hat - pink butterflies hover around your head, trailing as you move around.

After finishing the game, I watched more of the YouTube video and learned that you can get a pair of antlers, possibly by finishing the game quickly. I did not, however, do this.

Today, for completeness, I booted up Costume Quest Prototype. Unfortunately, the prototype has a couple of bugs which forced me to restart the game several times. After the third run, I decided to stop trying, at least for today.

Apparently this dragon costume never made the cut.

The bug with the first and third run consisted of facing an invincible rat (while equipping the fake mustache and dragon costumes, respectively). Both times, I ran the game from Steam. In contrast, the second run was run from the executable with the compatibility settings set to Windows XP SP2 - as recommended by a forum post.

In that run, I collected all the costumes (Dragon, Robot, and Statue of Liberty). Unfortunately, in what might have been the last of all the houses against a werewolf, the character (Wren) defeats the werewolf but the battle never ends. (Steam's running total: 23 min)

Werewolf versus Robot (Wren).

Needing screenshots, I went back in starting the game with Steam and this time I defeated the rat with my sneeze mask, but I couldn't with the dragon. So maybe I can write down where all the enemies are.

In my fifth run, I successfully used the sneeze mask against both rats and the robot against the werewolves. Upon defeating the enemies, the boss was unlocked and Wren saves the day! (Steam's running total: 47min)

If you are hoping to finish this prototype, you can make sure that you also use the sneeze mask against the rats and robot against the werewolves by using the pre-mapped locations below. Or you can go through and figure it out yourself. Happy gaming!

xxxx xxxx Safe xxxxxx Rat_ xx WWlf W

Tip: Killing a rat takes only two or three sneeze attacks. Any more and it's possible you ran into an invincible rat. Try making sure the executable is set to Windows XP SP2 (your mileage may vary).

Brazen Prototype - The Waracle

Today I capped this post off with playing Brazen. While I still should try the multiplayer mode out, playing through each of the characters was interesting. For me, the Stalwart was most difficult to play. Throwing out consecutive attacks will cycle through a sequence of three attacks, with the commitment to the last attack being rather long. As the monster is difficult to kite, this made moving in and out very difficult. It very possible, however, that I did not realize the full potential of his shield.

Brazen Prototype - The Beerzerker

For the Waracle, I mainly kited and only used her melee at the very end when I was cornered and knew that I could take the monster down with a couple of blows. Note that the first time I played as the Waracle, I didn't realize that I have to release the right mouse button to fire. I was able to beat the monster with the Waracle on the second try.

Finally, the Beerzerker is a lot of fun. He's really fast when you keep a healthy amount of beer in him and he deals a good amount of melee damage. Once during the fight, I managed to drink too much and his stamina bar will deplete as he vomits. It's quite hilarious. In any case, I was able to defeat the monster with the Beerzerker on the first try, that's how powerful he is.

Brazen Prototype - The Stalwart

In any case, all those attempts were on normal mode and so I'll have to try out hard mode some time. I can imagine the game would be fun with four players running around and it's too bad there isn't any indication of the game going beyond prototype form.

Race the Sun (PC) (2013)

Overview: Race the Sun is an endless runner* where you control a solar-powered vehicle and are racing against the setting sun (hence the title). Collect points, avoid obstacles, use power-ups, and try to get as far as you can before the sun sets or crashing!

*I just learned today that this is the name of the genre where the player character is continuously moving and the goal is to survive for as long as possible. Examples of this include Temple Run (2011), Robot Unicorn Attack (2010), and Jetpack Joyride (2011).

20141023:
Race the Sun is a bit difficult at the start, but immediately fun, even with all the crashing (it reminds me of the speeder bike chase scene in Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)).

I think this fun is partially due to the fact that objectives can be met in order to gain experience and unlock powers such as jumping or storing a jump. Thus, even though the player might make a minimal amount of progress on the current level, there is a sense of overall progress being made.

On that note, the game features a single level at any given time which changes after a fixed duration.

In addition to this feature, the game also allows players to make custom worlds.

After two hours of play, I would recommend this game to players looking for either a new endless runner to play or a fast-paced, yet casual gaming experience.

Gunpoint (PC) (2013)

20141022:
This game is neat. It has a spy theme, and plays like a puzzle platformer.

20141023:
Yesterday I got this game running just fine, but today I had trouble getting it to work. Upon getting the game to work, I think the problem might have been caused by trying to stream the game from my desktop to my laptop (a Steam feature).

In any case, I had disconnected Steam from my laptop and restarted several times before it got working again.

It should be noted that if the game were bad, I wouldn't have spent so much time to get it working, but the game is awesome, and I had to keep trying to get it to work!

20141025:
It's been a while since a game has hooked me into finishing it, but Gunpoint has managed to do so!* In addition to being short, the game mechanics were satisfying, the story was absolutely intriguing, and the aesthetics were great too!

Speaking more on the story, for the most part the story is quite fixed, with the most points of dialogue driving itself linearly regardless of how you choose to respond. However, there are key instances where your responses will affect the plot!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and highly recommend it to all video gamers. Even if you don't normally play this type of game, I suggest you try it for at least an hour.

Note that after finishing the game, I went back to replay some of the levels to get higher scores on them.

*From my records, the last game which I put time in to complete was Dear Esther. Both games are rather short. I played Dear Esther over two days: 20140509 and 20140510.

PAYDAY 2 (PC) (2013)

20141018:
I tried to play this game today. After going through the tutorial, I took a look at the online levels and the format simply felt overwhelming. As such, I tried to start a game with AI.

Getting into the level, I was told to do a job which involved stealing loot from a depot and that stealth would be needed. While this seemed like it would be a lot of fun, the game was not very helpful in terms of helping me find the loot.

Should I have been able to find it on my own? Possibly. But I couldn't, and consequently found the game was difficult and I didn't want to waste any more time on it. After all, I already found fun, enjoyable games (Injustice: Gods Among Us, Don't Starve and GRID 2); I would rather play more of those games before they expire.

Steam's Free Weekend Summary: PAYDAY 2 (couldn't get into it), Company of Heroes 2, Awesomenauts (already own), Blade Symphony (meh, not so fun), Don't Starve (pretty fun), Trine 2 (already own), Injustice: Gods Among Us (great storyline), XCOM Enemy Unknown, Killing Floor (already own), GRID 2 (it's alright).

Note: I can only hope that this game is more fun with friends.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (PC) (2013)

Overview: A fighting game based on characters in DC Comics. Playable characters include Batman, The Joker, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash.

20141018:
The game was available to play during the Steam Free Weekend,

Kicking Superman's butt (in the tutorial).

Gameplay Log:
Tutorial. Play as Batman and learn the basics.
Story Mode. The gameplay is interspersed with a story, the player must play specific characters at certain points in the story. The first character is Batman.
Getting used to the game, I tried to remember what I had learned from the tutorial.
The second character is The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). I was ready to look up the move list. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to press start! [The default "start" button is "4" when using the keyboard.]

Don't let Luthor get to you!

The third character is Aquaman, and the fourth character is The Joker.
While The Joker was fun, I needed to take a break. At that point, I decided to check out how many chapters there were. I learned the order of characters: Batman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Joker, Green Arrow, Cyborg, Deathstroke, Batman, Lex Luthor, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman.

Unfortunately I didn't get around to playing any more of Injustice: Gods Among Us, but I for the most part I enjoyed the game. In particular, I thought the stage interactions were pretty cool (I don't know how standard this is in fighting games, but its a nice game feature). Perhaps, however, the best part of the game was the cutscenes.

Steam Game Time: 2.1 hours

20190812:
Today I played Injustice: Gods Among Us to help break even on my purchase of the Humble WB Games Classics Bundle.

The Joker versus Batman

Gameplay Log:
I replayed the Tutorial. (~25 minutes)
At one point in the tutorial I had trouble with X, X, 6, 6 + RT. Apparently the trick was to press RT at the same time as the second 6. I initially was doing X, X, 6, 6, RT.
I picked up from where I left off with story mode: "Chapter Four: The Joker - Pick a Card" (Joker versus Nightwing).
Completed the last battle in Story Mode about 2.5 hours after resuming it.
About another twenty minutes for story, credits, and exploring the game menu

Aquaman versus Shazam

Steam Game Time: 5.5 hours (total game time) / 3.4 hours (session game time)

[20190812]

Thoughts:*
Pros:
+ Fun and simple game mechanics.
+ Good Visuals (especially with environment interactions)

Wonder Woman versus Wonder Woman

Neutral:
~ Certain character match-ups are not believable. For example, Superman versus Batman.

*I've only played Story Mode.

None at this time.

Don't Starve (PC) (2013)

20141018:
I tried playing Don't Starve for the first time today and it is the type of game that throws you into the deep end of the pool and expects you to survive on your own. With no explanation of symbols, interface, or purpose, you must figure it out, even if it requires a death or two along the way.

In my short one hour with the game, I learned a bunch and I won't try to spoil anything here. However, I can say that having played Terraria (2011) helped immensely, as I recognized the building aspect of the game and was able to familiarize myself with Don't Starve's building interface.

However, there were some differences between the two and it took me a while to understand them. Surely the game is designed with the intention for the player to have this sort of trial-and-error experience.

One tip I would give that shouldn't spoil the main gameplay is to build your main camp in a central location. I don't remember my reason for setting up my main camp on the edge of the map, but my poor location choice resulted in two days of walking across the map in hopes of obtaining manure (and eventually dying).

Another tip, related to input, is that it's more efficient to just hold the mouse button down than to repeatedly click. Clicking multiple times can actually cause unwanted actions.

Other than those two tips, I suggest you embrace the fun of discovery in the game - that and the funny object descriptions.

Overall, I found this a fun survival and crafting game and would look into adding it to my game collection in the future.

Today I played for the third, fourth, and fifth time.

Fighting Bats (20150201)

Steam Game Time: 89 minutes (session game time)

[20170323]

20150201:
Today I went for my sixth attempt at Don't Starve, and I survived up to four days (tying for second). It was a nice start with this patch of berry bushes to help me survive. Other resources were also good, but unfortunately I didn't catch any bunnies and lost most of my health in a fight against some bats. Well, I lived, but my health was so low after that.

(20150201)

Actually, using the touchpad also made playing the game hard.

In any case, I went on and decided to do some reading. While there were many good guides, here were a couple of pointers I had tried to implement:
1) Collect 12 flowers to make a garland.
2) Rush a crock pot.

GRID 2 (PC) (2013)

-- Removed from Steam* --

*20191207: In August 2019, the game was removed from Steam.

20141017:
At first I spent some time with the tutorial on the speedway - about half an hour.

After ending the session, I'm asked to enter some information and choose some settings. I decide to set the difficulty level at medium and the damage level at full. While I don't know the effect of the damage level, I thought the difficulty level was appropriate for me, at least for most races.

In particular, after playing the game for a while, I mostly got a hang of the controls.

Anyways, I thought the graphics and game mechanics were pretty good. I don't usually play racing games though, so I have nothing to compare this game with.

Regardless, one small complaint I have is that I couldn't see the car design changes as I made them.

I was also a bit confused about the sponsor mechanism. I guess it makes sense to commit to three sponsors, but it wasn't well explained and I was under the impression you can switch them.

In the end, I enjoyed shifting gears and drifting. While I wish there was a better tutorial than a narrator making vague suggestions and comments using technical jargon.

While I eventually got the gist of how to drive efficiently, I still don't know the finer details and ultimately depended on the rewind mechanism to win races.

Speaking of which, the rewind mechanism is pretty fun. It's basically what you get if you were to combine Prince of Persia: Sands of Time with a racing game.

At its simplest, the time rewind can be used to undo situations like ramming into a tree. However, say you realized you can cut an opponent off if had veered on the inside instead of the outside. Well, then just rewind time and do it! The caveat is you get a limited number of rewinds per race, so use them wisely!

In summary, I enjoyed the game enough to put a solid two and a half hours into the game. So why did I stop? Because I had the toughest time trying to complete an annoying (and difficult) objective race: pass more rally trucks than your opponent, lose points for crashing.

Super Hexagon (PC) (2012)

20141017:
Today was my first time playing this game and I only played for a short time. It was simple and somewhat addicting, but not addicting enough to keep my attention for more than a couple of minutes.

It should be noted that a couple of minutes is equal to a lot of tries and I was slowly making progress with each try. Unfortunately, I didn't see enough variety in the game to build an interest in it.

If you love addicting, fast-paced games and/or the Super Hexagon EP, then you should consider checking out this game.

20141019:
I played a little bit more today and took some screenshots. According to Steam, I've only logged a total of 12 minutes.

Note that the better long-run strategy is focusing on what's coming rather than what's in front of you. If you just look at what's in front of you, then it'll be too late to make the right choice (left/right).

20141124:
On account of my lack of effort with this game, I decided to play a little bit more.

One thing I realized today is that I shouldn't let the rotation of the plane affect my choice to go left or right. That choice should be based on efficiency, which is unrelated to the rotation of the plane.

Another thing I realized while playing is that you can take advantage of when the boundary is close to you. For example, if the opening is to your right, and you're about to hit the boundary. Instead of trying to accurately make it to the opening, you can just push hard right. Since the boundary is close, the cursor will be in the opening area as the boundary falls in and then most likely you end up past the boundary with the opening on your left (as opposed to behind you).

Then, as I play more and more, I also see the importance of just playing to become exposed to the different patterns and obstacles that occur and improving my reaction to them. For example, there's a spiral obstacle that became easier the more I tried to go through it and a zig-zag obstacle that became easier the more I tried as well.

A more general pattern I noticed is that the game alternates between a standard set of obstacles and a difficult obstacle. I suppose I try to use the more standard set of obstacles to relax just a bit.

On a related note, I began to get used to controlling the various necessary turning degrees: 60, 120, and 180.

Accounting for the time I spent blogging, today I played for about twenty minutes and made it to the thirty-eight second mark.

20151214 Comment:
Steam Game Time: 44 minutes (total game time)

20151214:
Today I played some more Super Hexagon and it's amazing how time flies by with this game. In addition, every time I thought about stopping, I just found myself playing more!

Overall, I did find myself improving the more I played. However, I tried two things that seemed to help:
1) Turn off the music
2) Change controls (see comparison)

Comparison of Controls:
Keyboard: Intuitively I started out using my laptop's arrow keys. The controls, however, felt stiff.
Touchpad Buttons: Then somehow I realized I could use the touchpad buttons and I liked the response. They are briefly stiff which is good for short distances and holding them down allows for smoothly executing long distances.
Mouse Buttons: For a short period I tried using my Logitech Mouse buttons but they were too easy to press and I typically overshot the openings.
