Today I played this game with my new controller. It took some getting used to slowing down for turns. Among my many weaknesses in this genre is a lack of intuition on how fast I need to be going prior to a turn and how fast I can go around the turn. As such, I was just doing practice runs on easy mode, and imitating the other cars in order to learn when to speed up or slow down. I later let Ben try a couple times but the wheel has so much force that it makes it difficult for him to control (it was manageable to drive slow but I still needed to help him). As such, Mario Kart Wii is still one of the best games for him to play.*

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PC) (2019)

Today I tried starting this game. The gameplay so far is not bad. The attack magic system takes me back to an older generation Castlevania game where the player catches souls - I can't remember which game implemented such a system. While it definitely has a Castlevania feel to it, it has a different visual style from Castlevania games I've played. I'm not used to the 3D model graphics, and I'm fond of the older GBA or DS art.

As I played more, I began to get into the gameplay and I no longer thought about the strange-looking character model. While I enjoyed the gameplay, the narration was mildly annoying, and I wasn't a fan of the story. Also what kind of name is Gebel? (joking, but also not joking)
On a different note, I was annoyed by the collision damage from touching enemies - something I don't recall from other Castlevania games. I feel it makes sense with certain enemies but I shouldn't take damage just from touching an enemies. In other words, I think the player should take damage when attacked, and for some enemies, attacking occurs via contact (e.g., a flying ball of flame or a slime). With that being said, it's been a long time since I've played a Castlevania game, so I could have simply forgotten about collison damage.
By the end of the session, I was stuck at a boss who uses a sword [Zangetsu]. I would keep misreading his moves, and the misreads would cost me HP. For example, with a certain move of his, it is important for me to jump up and get behind him. However, if I incorrectly read it, and he jumps, I'll jump and attempt to get behind him. Without a double jump or backdash, I would end up landing next to him and taking damage. [Actually, I learned on 20221029 that the character starts the game with a backdash.]

I was having trouble with Zangetsu. I eventually got to his second phase with the flame blade. In general, I figured two main things: jumping away and back in is best. Most of his moves safely allow for two hits from my choice of blade which is about 40 damage per move he makes. The exception is when he taunts and holds his blade up to block. Then 3 attacks can safely be made. It's possible some situations when well timed can be 3 attacks, and possibly 4 attacks can be executed against his taunt, but I learned to be conservative because I lost a lot of health whenever I tried to be aggressive. I sometimes used the flail in combination, both because it deals more damage only at the cost of some MP but also there might be an animation cancel that makes it quicker to use (I didn't experiment fully).
Despite the extensive breakdown, I happened upon the identification of a cheese strategy. Running to the stairs seems to reliably get him to use his taunt. As such, I would run to the stairs on the left, wait for his taunt, jump behind him and strike. Then I'll run to stairs on the right and repeat. Sometimes he'll throw his dart, but I just make sure to position myself on the stairs to where I can jump over it. Sometimes he'll run up the stairs a bit but back up to taunt (which leads me to guess that his taunt is triggered by the distance he travels). On the much more rare occasion, perhaps when he has not reached the taunt quota, he'll jump and slash. It is possible to dodge or just get hit, but regardless that interaction allows some free hits. Continue with the cheese strat.
When he goes into his secondary flame stage, the dart explodes early which is convenient. The cheese strat remains the same, if anything easier. Very much cheese but I'll take it.

I upgraded the arrow attack the other day. It's pretty handy.
Note that I previously made the complaint/remark that it wasn't possuble to switch setups easily. However, the other day I came across a pickup that unlocks shortcut setups. Initially it allows for 2 setups. Then in this last session I got another which makes for 3 setups.

Today I finally found the necessary progression by searching various uncovered map portions. The encounter was with a boss [Andrealphus] that is necessary to defeat in order to unlock the double jump. It was easy to defeat compared to other bosses thus far. Perhaps I was overleveled. Also using all of the MP bar to deal damage with arrows takes a chunk out of the boss. In combination with the arrow, I used the weapon where the sword is thrown and returns.
By comparison, Zangetsu was super hard compared to either the hand boss or this bird creature [Andrealphus].

I learned during this session that the backdash is available from the start. Huh. Not too important but probably would have helped against Zangetsu (without the cheese strat).
This double dragon [Valac] in the tower wasn't too difficult of a boss. I died once to them but their pattern was clear enough to take less damage and find times to simultaneously attack while dodging. That is, I could dodge many attacks and only sometimes get hit.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition (PC) (2012)

Today I started up the game. The character creation took a lot of reading. After completing it, I began going through the tutorial. However, I wasn't completely satisfied with playing the game on the Steam Deck.

Today I restarted the game. The character creation likely went by quicker, but I was sleepy and so the tutorial definitely took longer than it needed to. I stopped playing after completing the tutorial.
While I've only played through the tutorial, I would say that all the keyboard shortcuts to the various interfaces is very useful, and makes playing with keyboard and mouse likely the superior choice for me.

LEGO Bricktales (PC) (Demo)

Interesting. This game is actual LEGO building! Maybe this game has a full-on sandbox, but the demo centers around teaching the player to build via a story mode.
In any case the controls are mostly solid. My only difficulty while playing on the Steam Deck came from copying bricks: I have to hold down RB, click, and move at just the right time. I suspect it'll be more fun to play with keyboard and mouse. I believe they would give the player the accuracy and precision needed to build faster.

This game was different from how the cover looked. I thought it would be a platformer Metroidvania but the player gets to fly around and shoot (though it still describes itself as a Metroidvania). In any case, initially the player starts the game as a strong character named Robyn, partially for learning purposes and partially for story purposes. Then the game fast forwards and goes to another character named Rayn. The standard gun is supplemented by a spell system which is built from a deck that rotates. It is a neat mechanic.

For the demo, there were some screens which took a while to load. When I lost all my hearts as Rayn in an area where enemies were rushing, the game crashed. Unfortunately, upon loading the game back up there was no save file available and so I stopped playing there. I was, however, having fun playing the game.

- If this were a full game, I could have easily put at least another two to three hours into it.

Apparently various demos from Steam Next Fest expire, but fortunately this one didn't, because it was fun. Initially I wasn't fond of the graphics or the story. In particular, a gun combined with an umbrella seemed gimicky. However, the dash and lift of the umbrella with the shotgun fire were satisfying mechanics. There's also rifle fire which has it's uses (range fire).
In addition to the satisfying action mechanics, the game's story was crafting this intriguing mystery. To pair with this mystery were well-thought out sounds and music which add to the game's atmosphere. I immediately placed the game on my wishlist.

The demo so far is decent. I'm feeling tired and the controls on the Steam Deck require alterations that I was not keen on adjusting (I did make a couple of changes already). Overall, I think this game would be better experienced with a keyboard and mouse. I'd likely share this same sentiment with any sim/4k/strategy game that doesn't have dedicated controller support.
While my time with the demo was brief, the underwater theme and buildings had great detail.

- This game is a ton of fun.
- It was a little disorienting but partially my fault because I forgot to use the map.
- The shaking, 2.5D, and grabbing/throwing mechanics feel fresh and fun
- I'm not at the end of the demo yet, but I was tired (nodding off) and so I stopped playing
- I hope the final game has higher resolution character (or more generally more detailed textures across the board); while I was playing on the Steam Deck, I don't think that would be the limited factor here

Today I tried this demo. The demo allows the player to play the first two levels.
First Impressions:
- Not bad.
- Cool moves.
- Cool style, but gets getting used to (I kept pressing the wrong buttons).
- Too much talking. I think teaching game mechanics should be more hands on usage.

Pathfinders: Mini Words (PC) (2021)

I tried playing this game. It felt like a combination of Wordle (not to be confused with the web-based word game) and LYNE - though it fails to achieve even a fraction of the fun of either game alone. To be fair, the game might be intended for kids, because if a player already knows the words, then the game lacks depth and feels overly simple. At least Wordle occasionaly had some difficult puzzles here and there. This game took simplicity to the next level.

Shady Part of Me (PC) (2020)
Overview: A puzzle platformer involving a little girl and her shadow trying to escape a strange, dream-like world together.

Thus far this is a fun game. I love the atmospheric setting. The art design mixed with puzzle element is excellent. With that being said, the strength of the game thus far is leaning towards the art design and story, because the puzzling has been very light. Of course, I'm only about a third or fourth of the way done - based on the hidden origami I've collected thus far. Checking the achievements, I've fully completed Act 1, and there are four acts, but I feel like I'm probably close to finishing Act 2.

Getting back to the story, the ending definitely changes the perception of everything that occurs throughout the story: there's a twist near the end where it is revealed that technically the shadow is the real voice and not the little girl.

Today I decided to go back to collect missing hidden origami, and the game makes it a little easier by indicating the number of origami achieved by subsection.
Act 1 Fantasy 8 of 10. Found: 1 of the 2 is screenshoted. Found: The box that gets the shadow girl there has to be moved out of the way. Act 1 The Eacape 4 of 6. Found: The first is somehow in an obvious position but I guess nonobvious solution for the first playthrough. Found: The second was in a vent first tipped off by the shadow of the exit sign being opposite direction from the object and that it can be stood on. Act 2 Introspection 8 of 9. Found: At the end when she's trapped in the crane the bird is very small and easy to miss. Requires the shadow girl to jump.
I decided to take a break after Act 2 Introspection.

The two I needed for Act 3 were in Act 3 Ascension and in fact located at the very end during the cog turn. At a certain point in the rotation an origami appears for the shadow and during the same point the non shadow should move to get another origami.

I found the final missing hidden origami in Act 4. The first time I played through Act 4 I was left with one hidden origami still missing, so as I started going through the act again, I tried to focus on the border of the stage. My intuition was to compare this game to Braid. While individually the art and gameplay elements are strong, the entire package lacks the flow of Braid, because in Shady Part of Me the player has to frequently switch between two player characters - the young girl and her shadow. Of course, something I forgot is that this game has voicework and I personally enjoyed it. Overall, I would highly recommend this game.

Tracks - The Train Set Game (PC) (2019)
Overview: build a wooden toy train track

I played this game today with my son. We used the kid's room setting. For the most part, I had fun building a track with his input. Among the various interactions, he particularly enjoyed blowing the train whistle in the first-person view, which at times I found mildly annoying. Speaking of annoying, as he held the mouse to blow the whistle, the screen would shake, because he couldn't hold the mouse steady. The jittering view caused me to experience some dizziness.
As an aside, I didn't understand how to access the multiple train interface. It had happened at one point but I wasn't able to bring it up again.
Setup: PC. Keyboard and mouse.

First Impression:
The video game aspect of building a wooden toy train track has multiple benefits. For example, the player is allowed unlimited parts, parts fit together without any problems (unlike real wooden tracks), and elevating tracks don't require any support. There are many decorations available that would be expensive to acquire and further take up a lot of room. On that note, there is no mess involved. On the other hand, for a kid that is my son's age, the ability to interact with real trains and train tracks cannot be replaced by this game.
As a whole, this game is an amazing sandbox for those who've ever dreamed about putting together a wooden toy train track without the expense of an actual train track (for reference, the game cost $19.99 without any sales and a 100 piece train set on Amazon costs $44.99; recent sales for the game on Steam allow the game to be acquired for $11.99).

Reason for Playing:
I saw my cousin was playing this game and after talking with her, I had to buy and play it myself.
20220918:
Off the bat I liked using the bow, but the game encourages collection and so I tried using all the weapons. They seem balanced with each weapon suiting a different playstyle. That is, they all seem equally powerful, but they have very different playstyles.
I've thus far collected Titan BLood for the bow, spear, sword, and shield (in that order).
My early game accessment of the different weapons:
Coronacht, Heart-Seeking Bow (bow): long range with decent aoe, requires charging and needs correct timing for big damage.
Varatha, Eternal Spear (spear): long range, and the special gets more damage from backstab but AOE (hold X) is hard to pull off.
Stygius, Stygian Blade (sword): short range, but quick. Special is also quick and has decent AOE.
Aegis, Shield of Chaos (shield): blocks attacks (even Megara's attacks)! This makes a lot of fights in Tarturus easier. But the dashing part of the attack in Asphodel isn't as good (for me as a new player) due to the lava and also a common enemy in Asphodel are bombers.

Today I've collected Titan Blood for the gloves and the gun. So the next phase is the possibility to unlock various Aspects for the different weapons. I decided at this point to check out some articles and Youtube videos (since Titan Blood seems rare and I didn't want to spend it without some idea of what's to come).
Malphon, Twin Fists of Malphon (gloves): very close range, high commitment to getting into the fight, focused on speed and rhythm (between attack and special).
Exagryph, Adamant Rail (gun): medium-long range, consistent damage, with good AOE (bomb), limited by ammunition (requires manual reload or waiting for automatic reload)

Among the possible Aspects, I decided to focus on the bow with the Aspect of Hera.
Given the option of picking a better boon which I've already chosen before (no more Fated Choice flag) and a lesser boon which I've not yet chosen before (still has Fated Choice flag), I've been picking the lesser boon. With that being said, one of my favorite runs was the bow with repeated attack, double, and some sort of deflect. Otherwise there's a damage dropoff due to a lack of clear speed and area control. On that note, there's a Poseiden cast which is great for area control.

I got to Hades today (maybe twice). Anyways, I got him lower in HP in his second stage but I wasn't sure if I should spend time to hit the green things.* I think both times I made use of Athena's call.

20221004 Part 2:
I managed to beat Hades! I mainly depended on Athena's cast. I also think my spear special was transformed to a shot. I used Athena's cast to kill off the little exploding enemies whenever possible. I think I also went with Athena's call.
Remark: the other day when I reached Hades for the first time, I thought he was dead after the first life bar but he really wasn't. That was a surprise.*
Afterwards, I tried to play the game with 1 heat. Adding heat is good for getting Titan Blood and Diamond.

20221006:
I completed a run with 1 heat using Stygian, Aspect of Poseiden, which together with the Poseiden cast was strong (it also helped that I had an extra cast from an item in Charon's shop). Then later I got Blizzard Shot which initially felt weak but it surprising deals a good amount of damage. Perhaps it just looks like it doesn't deal damage because it moves so slowly. In addition, the cast automatically is left on the ground so it doesn't have to be dislodged. My weaknesses during the final fight were being too slow, so I couldn't evade/escape Hades as he pursued me. Either extra movement speed or an extra dash would have been good here. I also had lacked any form of deflect.
The Sweet Nectar Duo Boon (Aphrodite/Poseidon) was strong, felt useful, yet not over-powered.
Besides the cast, I had put emphasis on the special which was fairly strong: level 5 Heartbreak Flourish with Super Nova (greater area and extra damage).
Note that I had barely defeated Hades. I had 12 out of 330 HP.
As a final note on the run, I was part way through when my Steam Deck ran out of battery. The game started back at the beginning with the same seed. I had previously read about this but did not intentionally try to make use of it. It happens that this restart became the run which I defeated Hades. I did make a major deviation from the first run on the seed. The first time around, I took a Daedalus Hammer upgrade that lowers the lifepool, and grants life recovery with every attack. The second time I opted to take a different upgrade.

Today I did several runs. Apparently the Administrative Room keeps a record of all the runs which is really cool.
On a different note, sometimes collectong a boon simply to make progress towards a Minor Prophecy results in a poor build. Of course this happens less asI play the game more.
Gameplay Log:
I guess with all the unlocks it's easier. Next Hades run (a streak of 2) is also a success with a larger margin. This time I covered both weaknesses mentioned on 20221006; I had speed boost after dash and a form of deflect. I combined Aspect of Hestia + Lightning Rod.
The Daedalus Hammer upgrade which increases the radius and damage at the cost of dealing damage to the player when hit didn't seem to do that much damage.
Lightning Rod while probably didn't add that much damage, nonetheless did add damage.
Aphrodite's Aid felt useless during Redacted. A greater call that hit Hades results in a charm that is barely noticeable [20230228: some damage is dealt, but the efficiency may be lacking; that is, other calls have the opportunity to result in greater damage dealt to Hades]

I got some more wins in today. I think having a long distance cast against Hades is good. Speaking of long distance, I saw a technique where the player can use the Coronacht special at close range to deal a lot of damage to a single target ("shotgun"). I tried to incorporate it into my gameplay but couldn't really make good use of it. On the topic of Coronacht, the one aspect where it auto targets the last foe attacked is underwhelming, because it's just four arrows.*
Festive Fog is decent when spammed but sometimes better when thought goes into spreading it out for more AOE or as increased damage.

*20230228: However, when it is fully upgraded, auto-targeting 8 shots onto a single target can actually be a good amount of damage which is also safe, because the player can focus on dodging and using the special for free damage.

Stygius reset cast with special and... probably Trippy Shot
Poseiden's Aid
Coronacht with +3 arrows to special, and applying Doom
Trippy Shot with Zeus duo is strong ("Your Festive Fog effects also deal lightning damage periodically") whereas Poseidan-Aphrodite duo is just okay to me (I previously said it was "strong, felt useful, yet not over-powered."
Quick cast drop and/or Stygius reset with cast dislodge damages
In addition to the above, I've also made the following notes:
Artemis's Aid is crap.
Crystal Beam without being fast is just okay. Without being able to move quickly, it is much more reliant on being positioned further from the enemy.

During the last run of the night I was going for Deadly Reversal, which was the last Duo Boon to collect for the prophecy. To be honest, I wasn't sure of True Shot level 5, but combined with some other boons it did well. Aspect of Aris increases damage by +75% (assuming this multiplier applies to the Doom as well). Epic Urge to Kill applies +16%. Rare Excruciating Shot (increased damage of cast). Quick Reload so the cast ammo drops faster with level 3 Exit Wounds. That's (188 + 186)*(1+.75) + 186*(.59+.16) damage times 4 casts every 3.3 seconds, which is about 186*17 = 3162 damage every 3.3 seconds - though one should penalize this value by the time it takes to retrieve the cast ammo. But thanks to Greater Recall (cast ammo automatically returns), I'll assume it takes about 0.7 seconds for the cast ammo to return, then I would have been dealing about 3000 damage every 4.0 seconds! Even when Hades is using his beam in the second stage, I can still hit him from behind a column (an advantage of True Shot not available for other shots). In the second stage, I also used Battie for 2500 dmage plus a full rare Artemesis Aid which is 1100 damage (10 arrows at 110 damage each). Some remarks. First, these calculations don't event take into account additional critical damage. With that being said, I don't think I was making much use of Deadly Reversal, and I probably wasn't proccing Aspect of Eris very often. In any case, the order of magnitude of damage estimated here means I'm dealing about one or two Batties worth of damage every 4 seconds!

Holy moly. So I had fully upgraded the Aspect of Chiron, which means 8 shots are fired from the special (and will fire at the last enemy hit by attack). Then in one of my runs, I also had Concentrated Volley, which reads +3 base for each consecutive hit. Assuming all 8 arrows hit, that's 3*(1+2+...+7) = 54 additional damage. I later checked with Skelly, and the special's base hit is 10, so a full hit with 8 arrows is 80, and thus the total damage with Concentrated Volley would be 134 damage per special. For damage multipliers in that same run, I had level 3 Tempest Flourish (+182%), Caustic Flourish (+95%), Pauper's Flourish (+90%), Chimera Jerky (+40%), and Strong Drink (+15%). On top of these my special was applying Rupture and my attack was applying Doom, so I'll assume Priveleged Status was typically up which is an additional +40%. That's a total multiplier of +462% damage. Thus every special is doing about 134*(1+4.62) = 753.08 damage. Typically a cycle consists of one attack (with Doom damage) followed by two or three specials, resulting on damage on the order of 2000 damage per cycle.

Recently all the games on my Steam Deck were somehow uninstalled. Upon loading up Hades, I found that all my progress was gone! After further inspection, the games don't appear to be uninstalled, but rather deleted.* In any case, at risk of overwriting my old save file, I had such a hankering to play the game that I started a new save file. I couldn't beat Meg on the first run, but I beat her on the second run, and subsequently lost to the Hydra.
*I originally thought the culprit was a program I used called syncthing, but syncthing would have theoretically moved a deleted file to the `.stsversions` folder.

I'm making faster progress than playing the first time around due to my familiarity with the enemies and boons. However, I still faced some difficulty without all the upgrades. Reacquiring some of the fated prophecies will be a grind, as too will be collecting gems and leveling up keepsakes.

Yay! I was able to recover my save files! I ran an escape attempt (got Cluster Bomb with Rocket Bomb) but was hasty in some places and lost too many Death Defiances. If I had one more Death Defiance or some source of health towards the end, I would have been able to defeat Hades. I had tons of damage. I guess I was trying too hard to use Cluster Bomb at the start of the run.
In any case, this Reddit thread, "Steam Deck Method to Recover Lost Save File [...]," helped me arrive at a solution (though I remain unsure about the cause of the problem). I had also read the following related threads: "Games on SD Card missing [...]" and "Steam Deck deleting games automatically [...]". To recap, all of the games installed on my Steam Deck were lost (it later became relevant that they were installed on the Steam Deck's internal storage). I had identified that the games were not uninstalled, but removed (because when I redownloaded Hades, a game that was simply uninstalled would have likely retained the save file). However, after reading the aforementioned Reddit post, it turns out the files weren't removed, but moved; they were moved from their expected location to `rootfs/run/media/mmcblk0p1/steamapps/`.

I paused my current run with Coronacht. Before that I had a run with Stygius (sword) and I got Hermes's fast cast fire and Artemis's Exit Wounds (foes take damange when cast ammo is dislodged). Some other skills complemented the rapid damage. I simply unloaded (Poseiden) cast, dislodged the cast ammo, and repeat. The Hades clear with this combo was insane. A great compliment to this simple combo was Poseiden's Call which seemed to charge well and could be used often.

Before going to sleep, around 1 AM, I was testing out Steam Link (from my Steam Deck to my phone). I decided to first test it out with Hades. I was in the middle of a run, after a boss fight, and had the shield equipped. In my short time playtesting, I felt like having all the action buttons mapped close to the right hand would be cumbersome. Perhaps using a controller would have been sufficient. After Hades, I tested out Steam Link with LYNE.

Off the bat I liked using the bow, but the game encourages collection and so I tried using all the weapons. They seem balanced with each weapon suiting a different playstyle. That is, they all seem equally powerful, but they have very different playstyles.
I've thus far collected Titan BLood for the bow, spear, sword, and shield (in that order).
My early game accessment of the different weapons:
Coronacht, Heart-Seeking Bow (bow): long range with decent aoe, requires charging and needs correct timing for big damage.
Varatha, Eternal Spear (spear): long range, and the special gets more damage from backstab but AOE (hold X) is hard to pull off.
Stygius, Stygian Blade (sword): short range, but quick. Special is also quick and has decent AOE.
Aegis, Shield of Chaos (shield): blocks attacks (even Megara's attacks)! This makes a lot of fights in Tarturus easier. But the dashing part of the attack in Asphodel isn't as good (for me as a new player) due to the lava and also a common enemy in Asphodel are bombers.

Today I've collected Titan Blood for the gloves and the gun. So the next phase is the possibility to unlock various Aspects for the different weapons. I decided at this point to check out some articles and Youtube videos (since Titan Blood seems rare and I didn't want to spend it without some idea of what's to come).
Malphon, Twin Fists of Malphon (gloves): very close range, high commitment to getting into the fight, focused on speed and rhythm (between attack and special).
Exagryph, Adamant Rail (gun): medium-long range, consistent damage, with good AOE (bomb), limited by ammunition (requires manual reload or waiting for automatic reload)

Among the possible Aspects, I decided to focus on the bow with the Aspect of Hera.
Given the option of picking a better boon which I've already chosen before (no more Fated Choice flag) and a lesser boon which I've not yet chosen before (still has Fated Choice flag), I've been picking the lesser boon. With that being said, one of my favorite runs was the bow with repeated attack, double, and some sort of deflect. Otherwise there's a damage dropoff due to a lack of clear speed and area control. On that note, there's a Poseiden cast which is great for area control.

I got to Hades today (maybe twice). Anyways, I got him lower in HP in his second stage but I wasn't sure if I should spend time to hit the green things.* I think both times I made use of Athena's call.

I managed to beat Hades! I mainly depended on Athena's cast. I also think my spear special was transformed to a shot. I used Athena's cast to kill off the little exploding enemies whenever possible. I think I also went with Athena's call.
Remark: the other day when I reached Hades for the first time, I thought he was dead after the first life bar but he really wasn't. That was a surprise.*
Afterwards, I tried to play the game with 1 heat. Adding heat is good for getting Titan Blood and Diamond.

I completed a run with 1 heat using Stygian, Aspect of Poseiden, which together with the Poseiden cast was strong (it also helped that I had an extra cast from an item in Charon's shop). Then later I got Blizzard Shot which initially felt weak but it surprising deals a good amount of damage. Perhaps it just looks like it doesn't deal damage because it moves so slowly. In addition, the cast automatically is left on the ground so it doesn't have to be dislodged. My weaknesses during the final fight were being too slow, so I couldn't evade/escape Hades as he pursued me. Either extra movement speed or an extra dash would have been good here. I also had lacked any form of deflect.
The Sweet Nectar Duo Boon (Aphrodite/Poseidon) was strong, felt useful, yet not over-powered.
Besides the cast, I had put emphasis on the special which was fairly strong: level 5 Heartbreak Flourish with Super Nova (greater area and extra damage).
Note that I had barely defeated Hades. I had 12 out of 330 HP.
As a final note on the run, I was part way through when my Steam Deck ran out of battery. The game started back at the beginning with the same seed. I had previously read about this but did not intentionally try to make use of it. It happens that this restart became the run which I defeated Hades. I did make a major deviation from the first run on the seed. The first time around, I took a Daedalus Hammer upgrade that lowers the lifepool, and grants life recovery with every attack. The second time I opted to take a different upgrade.

On a different note, sometimes collectong a boon simply to make progress towards a Minor Prophecy results in a poor build. Of course this happens less asI play the game more.

I guess with all the unlocks it's easier. Next Hades run (a streak of 2) is also a success with a larger margin. This time I covered both weaknesses mentioned on 20221006; I had speed boost after dash and a form of deflect. I combined Aspect of Hestia + Lightning Rod.
The Daedalus Hammer upgrade which increases the radius and damage at the cost of dealing damage to the player when hit didn't seem to do that much damage.
Lightning Rod while probably didn't add that much damage, nonetheless did add damage.
Aphrodite's Aid felt useless during Redacted. A greater call that hit Hades results in a charm that is barely noticeable [20230228: some damage is dealt, but the efficiency may be lacking; that is, other calls have the opportunity to result in greater damage dealt to Hades]

I got some more wins in today. I think having a long distance cast against Hades is good. Speaking of long distance, I saw a technique where the player can use the Coronacht special at close range to deal a lot of damage to a single target ("shotgun"). I tried to incorporate it into my gameplay but couldn't really make good use of it. On the topic of Coronacht, the one aspect where it auto targets the last foe attacked is underwhelming, because it's just four arrows.*
Festive Fog is decent when spammed but sometimes better when thought goes into spreading it out for more AOE or as increased damage.

Some other skills complemented the rapid damage. I simply unloaded (Poseiden) cast, dislodged the cast ammo, and repeat. The Hades clear with this combo was insane. A great compliment to this simple combo was Poseiden's Call which seemed to charge well and could be used often.

Before going to sleep, around 1 AM, I was testing out Steam Link (from my Steam Deck to my phone). I decided to first test it out with Hades. I was in the middle of a run, after a boss fight, and had the shield equipped. In my short time playtesting, I felt like having all the action buttons mapped close to the right hand would be cumbersome. Perhaps using a controller would have been sufficient. After Hades, I tested out Steam Link with LYNE.

Save Room (PC) (2022)
Overview: A puzzle game based around the inventory management sytem of Resident Evil 4.

This game is essentially taking the inventory part of Resident Evil 4 and making a puzzle game out of it. It's simple and relaxing to play. It can, however, be occasionally tedious. Playing on the Steam Deck, the default controls are best, although not super fast as I imagine it would be to play using a mouse on a computer. Furthermore, using the touchscreen doesn't allow the player to go back to the regular controls - which I would consider a bug. Using the touchscreen isn't ideal because there's a lack of precision when clicking and dragging. Maybe using the Steam Deck touchpad as a mouse would have worked.
I have 4 hidden achievements left.

I woke up at night and I started messing with the Steam Deck controls for this game. I played around with a keyboard setup, but ultimately I found the default controller setup was good, and with some tweaking I found it to be better than the keyboard setup I spent time configuring.

I was playing on PC with a mouse, which was super conveneient compared to the controller scheme (which is best on the Steam Deck). My goal was to use a guide and collect four remaining achievements: (1) "Not enough health, stranger.", (2) "Can I eat that?", (3) "Did you catch the reference?"*, and (4) "Master Stacker". But first I had to replay the entire game. However, I only got to Level 36 before I was so sleepy that I decided to stop playing. In addition, I had already unlocked all the levels on the Steam Deck, so it would be slightly more efficient to finish the achievements there (instead of first unlocking all the levels on PC). I think from the herbs, I'm missing G+G and G+G+G.

Today I played the game for the first time. I cleared various themes in the 3x3 grid section (animals, beach, camping) and a theme in the 4x4 grid section (science). I also started the sports theme in the 5x5 grid section. It was truly challenging. It was so difficult that I decided to stop after completing the third of ten puzzles for the 5x5 sports.

While drafting this blog, I read some reviews and apparently the developers of this game basically just flipped the assets - that is they purchased the assets and more or less just turned around and sold the game on Steam. As I acquired the game (along with it's sequels) as part of a build-your-own bundle, I'm not upset about the money spent (essentially 50 cents for the "Wordle Franchise Bundle" which currently costs $4.50 on Steam); I like word games, and 50 cents for a mediocre word game isn't bad. Furthermore, the game appears to have been sold before the popular web-based game with the same name. However, there appears to be a lack of effort to provide any additional value to the assets. If I had known this, I would not have included the game for purchase in the bundle.tl;dr: assets were simply flipped with no additional effort; this type of behavior should not be supported; do not buy this game

That's a very high level similarity. Otherwise the game mechanics, story, and theme make for a distinct platforming experience (for example the player character can attack with an umbrella).

Yesterday I purchased some games and one of the games is called Cats in Time where the "I" in "Time" is pictured in the title as an hourglass (the same as "A Hat in Time"). From what I could tell from the trailer, that game also has a similar 3D visual design. Finally, "Hat" rhymes with "Cats"! Those three details combined had me question today if both games were by the same developer. They aren't. A Hat in Time was developed by Gears for Breakfast, and Cats in Time was developed by Pine.

Faerie Solitaire Remastered (PC) (2017)

Today I decided to play this game, technically revisit it, since I had previously played Faerie Solitaire (a.k.a., Faerie Solitaire Classic).
The game was fairly easy on the lower difficulty and so I eventually increased it. With that being said, the difficulty level doesn't increase the difficulty of the level itself, instead it just increases the difficulty of reaching the goal. I don't think that's a satisfying increase in difficulty. As such, idon't think I'll be getting back into this game.
