Overview: A horizontal arcade shooter. Defend the deep sea milk mining kittens from sea monsters!
20180617:
Today I initially played the game for 50 minutes! It was simple, but fun. After using the restroom, I played for an additional 35 minutes.
Offline Game Time: 85 minutes
[20190216 Edit]
20190216:
Today I revisited the game for a quick refresher (before putting together a blog post).
Setup: Loading the game up in my desktop today, I noticed my previous game save (from my laptop) didn't sync (I also couldn't take any screenshots with the Steam hotkey, F12). Thankfully it was an easy fix. I opened the game on my laptop, closed it, and then ran it from my desktop (I coincidentally also recovered the ability to take screenshots). Having previously played the game offline, I'm guessing the game only uploads its save file to the Steam Cloud after opening the game while Steam is online.
Setup: Played in windowed mode and keyboard.
Steam Game Time: 60 minutes
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Simple, yet fun
+ Game elements are introduced at a steady pace.
Neutral:
~ Short levels
~ Retro graphics
Minor Con:
- Apparently this version of the game lacks some of the features added to the DX (PS4/PSV) /UDX (XB1) versions.
Summary:
I didn't think about it while playing the game, but Aqua Kitty - Milk Mine Defender does a great job at being a retro game: simple controls, simple graphics, and simple goal. If you enjoy casual shooters and/or retro shooters, then I would recommend Aqua Kitty - Milk Mine Defender.

Corporate Lifestyle Simulator (PC) (2014)
Overview: Wield a stapler, fire extinguisher, chainsaw, and more as you, Dude, make your way through the office killing upper management. According to the game, they may or may not be zombies, it's hard to tell the difference.
20180617:
What I thought would be an actual corporate lifestyle simulator turned out to be an isometric zombie shooter!!! It was fun, but hard to play with a touchpad.
Offline Game Time: 13 minutes
20190114 AM Hours:
Today I revisited the game. First, it's full of jokes. For example, it often breaks the fourth wall. And, centered around the game's title, it is constantly poking fun at corporate and upper management. In general, the story is funny. Actually, I was surprise the game had such a strong story.
Setup: Keyboard and mouse. 800 x 600 windowed.
Gameplay Log:
Is that a reference to Highlander (cutscene after level 11)
Becoming Shogun?
Steam Game Time: 75 minutes (session game time)
20190115:
Today I went into the menu to check out what was available. I was particularly interested in seeing if one could set buttons for weapons 10 through 15. This was not possible. I was also interested if there were any in-game achievements. I could not find any.
Steam Game Time: 9 minutes (session game time)
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Hilarious
+ Easy/Casual; dying just means retrying the level and there's plenty of ammo/health to pick up from killing zombies.
+ Simple gameplay, but good story
Neutral:
~ Simple top-down shooter.
~ Get more powerful weapons as the game progresses
~ Summaries are shown at the end of the game of how many zombies are killed, persons are saved, and things destroyed, but they seem to be of no consequence. Perhaps players can set private goals such as 100% Zombies Killed speedrun or 100% things destroyed speedrun.
~ The game hides it's difficulty settings in the "Game Options" menu.
Con:
- Keyboard shortcuts are limited to 1 through 9 but there are 15 weapons. I would have assigned the remaining weapons to letters. (Oddly, you can change the keyboard shortcut for weapons 1 through 9 in the "Keyboard Setup" menu. Please let me set keys for Weapons 10 through 15!!!)
Summary:
In the end, the gameplay is just okay, while the story is great, and therefore I would recommend the game for the laughs. If you have the game in your library, then just play it for at least ten minutes.

They Breathe (PC) (2012)
Overview: You are a frog making swimming deep down into the mysterious waters below the surface. As you make your way down, you encounter... other creatures. What do they want? What do they need? It's a mystery. It's a discovery. It's part of the adventure. It's part of the fun.
20180614:
I took a break from playing games and returned to my seat. Eventually, however, I was bored and so I tried to look for one more game to play. I decided to play They Breathe. As with the other games, I played it without sound and offline. I didn't, however, get to play much of it (I don't remember why*).
Setup: Zenbook, without sound.
Offline Game Time: 3 minutes (session game time)
*If I were to guess (20190222), I was on a plane and the plane was about to land, so I turned the game off in order to shut down my laptop.
[20190222 Edit]
20180617:
Today I played another set of games offline. The first game I played was They Breathe, because I only got to play three minutes of it the last time I set out to play games.
Setup: Zenbook, with sound.
Gameplay Log:
Warning: The majority of this game is the discovery. So I would recommend not reading the spoilers.
This game is mysterious.
The person next to me on the plane, we had previously talking, was looking over and said it looks like that one's (referring to one of the frogs) crying for help. I agreed with him. [It didn't immediately process that I should help it get bubbles.]
These moose are really just jelly with dead frogs!!!
Difficult first run. I only saved three frogs and I died several times.
While I managed to finish the game, I didn't completely understand it.
First Impressions:
The game play was initially mysterious and unravels as it progresses. For example, the second spoiler above was mind blowing. In any case, the most similar game I've played to this one is Coil.
Offline Game Time: 27 minutes (session game time)
20190221:
Today I revisited the game in order to refresh myself on it (for the blog). It was fun to re-experience the game and what it had to offer.
Setup: Desktop, with sound.
Gameplay Log:
Started a game.
Wasn't sure if there was a resume feature (in hindsight, there is) and so I paused the game for 20 minutes while caring for baby.
After many deaths, I finished the game.
At the end of the credits, there was a website and a password.
Spent 7 minutes on the website.
Turned the game off.
Later came back and played for another 16 minutes.
Steam Game Time: 78 minutes (session game time)
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Atmospheric
+ Minimalistic
+ Great sound
+ Short game, but quality gameplay
+ Reasonable checkpoints (unlimited tries)
Neutral:
~ Lack of instructions due to the developer's intention of discovery
Summary:
Overall, They Breathe is a short, but enjoyable game.

KNIGHTS (PC) (2016)
Overview: A puzzle game that makes use of the unique movement of the knight, a chess piece that jumps two squares away horizontally and one square vertically or two squares away vertically and one square horizontally. The goal of each puzzle is simple: cover the red spaces with red knights and blue spaces with blue knights.
20180606 AM:
Completed the first two sets. The last level of the second set was tricky.
Steam Game Time: 30 minutes (session game time)
20180606 PM:
A major strategy in this game for more difficult puzzles is thinking backwards; like a maze.
But sometimes it's a mix of luck. And often it's about pushing pieces around. Creating a chain of pieces.
Another general strategy is making use of the fact that a knight has more limited movement away from the center. Take the additional limited movement of the pieces on a given board into account.
Symmetry vs. Asymmetry.
C-3 was neat because the fact that it was a simple permutation was slightly obscured (because the labels of the different pieces are colors which makes it feel less permuted). But believe!
Steam Game Time: 82 minutes (session game time)* / 112 minutes (total game time)
*I left the game on for a couple minutes while I drank my vitamins. Possibly 10 minutes.
20180608 AM:
I finished the level four (Queen) stages and then I stopped at the fourth level of the fifth (King) stage (which I tried once before deciding it was a good time to go to sleep.
Steam Game Time: 2.6 hours (total game time)
20180611:
D-5 was giving me lots of trouble. So I spent 6 minutes to draw the network of nodes and edges and 4 minutes to do another after filling small nodes. Then I spent 9 minutes understanding it. Apparently space D-4 was critical in switching from "one track" to "another track." Following this analysis, it took seconds to complete the puzzle upon returning to the game.
In any case, I just need two more achievements for 100%: Clear 10 Daily Levels and 25 Daily Levels (I've already completed 5 Daily Levels).
Besides just trial-and-error, my general strategy involves the following three steps:
1) Determining which spaces have only one path leading towards them (and more generally keeping track of how many connections a space has)
2) Backtracking the spaces I need until I get to an open space (mentioned above as "creating a chain of pieces")
3) Thinking of how certain actions permute the pieces and how I can combine different groups to permute the pieces to achieve what I want.
Steam Game Time: 3.0 hours (session game time) / 5.6 hours (total game time)
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Minimalist
Neutral:
~ Procedurally-generated levels
Cons:
- Lacks a "fewest moves" feature.
- Fairly easy given a handful of basic principals. I was only stuck on about four or five puzzles.
- Generally puzzles look difficult but aren't.
Summary:
Overall, the game was simple; in fact, that's part of the reason why I kept playing (because I knew I could finish it in a short amount of time).
However, mileage may vary and some players may find the game more difficult and some may find it even easier than I found it. I would also note that chess players would neither necessarily like nor dislike the game.
I neither recommend for nor against the game.
20220702:
Not too long ago I decided that instead of playing as many games from my library as possible, I would actually start to focus on certain games. As part of that, today I started browsing the list of games I have under my Steam "Complete Eventually" category. Among them, KNIGHTS randomy caught my eye. Getting into the game, I realized I completed the main campaign, but had the option of doing 20 Daily puzzles to complete the remaining achievements. After doing about 10 it began to get boring, but I decided to push on with the grind.
Adding to the general strategy above, I would say today I focused on the following:
1) Fill the corners and edges (similar to number one above).
2) Focusing on getting a yellow Knight to it's position is often as useful as getting a red or blue Knight into position (in trying to fulfill number one)
3) Sometimes instead of cycles, it's better to think about opportunities to swap pieces. That is, how should one make use of the gaps to swap two pieces
Steam Game Time: 2.8 hours (session game time) / 8.4 hours (total game time)
