Overview: Weapons-based fighting game.
20170326:
Today I played a couple rounds of The Last Blade.
Setup: Keyboard.
However, I eventually paused the game to look at the command list and decided to stop playing. First, because using a gamepad to execute the moves would be easier (and I didn't want to go setup my gamepad). Second, because I didn't want to invest time into learning new moves.
Steam Game Time: 20 min
Thoughts:
Neutral:
~ Old-school
~ Fight with weapons
~ Deflection is difficult
Cons:
- Story is all in Japanese

Sniper Elite V2 (PC) (2012)
Overview: A third-person shooter and stealth game.
20170325:
Nearing my limit of media (watching shows, playing games, and blogging), I moved away from my "Recommended By Filter" list (of which I played Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory and Proteus) and instead loaded up Sniper Elite V2 which was on my "List to Play... For Reals" list.
Setup: Keyboard & Mouse. Moved the graphic detail from Medium to High.
Tip: When possible, determine a position where enemies will funnel in towards your position. Then take them down one at a time.
Tip: Whenever possible, scope out the scene ahead with the binoculars and tag enemies to keep track of their whereabouts. Check roofs and high ground for enemy snipers.
Tip: Enemies will come to the aid of their wounded comrades. In other words, wounding enemies can be an effective way to bait other enemies into position.
Tip: Firing a shot in an enemy's direction can be enough to deter the soldier from advancing towards your position and return fire.
Tip: Dynamite is laid down, whereas grenades are thrown. I'm not sure how dynamite is detonated, perhaps by shooting it?
Steam Game Time: 90 minutes
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ The cinematic sniper hits are awesome. I've yet to turn them off (though I've only played for 90 minutes).
+ Built-in tutorial
+ The game is forgiving, with decent checkpoints and health which replenishes outside of short skirmishes.
Neutral:
~ Perhaps I wasn't looking close enough, but there didn't seem to be enough stealthy alternatives. This makes the game a bit more action than stealth; at least from what I could tell.
~ I would prefer mapping bombs to one of the number keys. I'm not sure why that's not the default.
~ Linear; markers indicate the general direction of the current mission objective
Summary:
Although I'm not into (pure) shooters, I enjoyed playing Sniper Elite V2 because it had a mix of stealth and planning. Furthermore, Sniper Elite V2, as it's name would suggests, emphasizes use of the sniper rifle.
While Sniper Elite V2 doesn't come close to a full-blown stealth game like Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell, there were enough stealth elements to keep me playing for 90 minutes.
Ultimately, if you enjoy shooters, you'll still feel comfortable playing Sniper Elite V2. If you're more into stealth games, then Sniper Elite V2 won't be your kind of game, but might be

Proteus (PC) (2013)
Overview: In Proteus, explore an island and experience the sounds and visuals it has to offer.
20170325:
Attempting to knock down several games off a game list I made the other day (using Depressurizer v0.7.2.0), I decided to play Proteus after having tried Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory (PC) (2010).
While tempted to look at a guide, I stayed strong and ultimately experienced Proteus without one.
Setup: Default settings. Keyboard. Fullscreen.
Steam Game Time: 34 minutes
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Great soundtrack, though it borders on experimental music, so it might not be for everybody
+ Visually pleasing - in an artistic way
+ Relaxing
Neutral:
~ No clear objectives
~ Walking simulator
Comparison:
My first impression was that the game would be similar to Dear Esther (PC) (2012) or MirrorMoon EP (PC) (2013). However, other than the walking, Proteus was not similar to either.
Summary:
Proteus was a relaxing experience and I would highly recommend playing it with a good pair of headphones. However, whether or not you should play it to begin with is a different story. At best, I would recommend it if you enjoy the journey, and not the destination.

Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory (PC) (2010)
Overview: Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory is a puzzle platformer where hidden tiles are activated as the protagonist passes them. Use the hidden tiles to make it to the exit of each level.
20170325:
I gave Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory a try today but it wasn't nearly as fun as I thought it would be.
Setup: Windowed. Keyboard.
Steam: 30 minutes
Thoughts:
Cons:
- Unintuitive gameplay (e.g., hidden tiles are not always known to the player and can only be found via trial-and-error.)
- Boring
Summary:
While the game had the potential to be better, I had no interest to continue playing and find out if it would.
With that being said, I should note that one of the reasons I didn't like the game was because it required some trial-and-error. However, this complaint doesn't capture the full picture. Once many years ago I played and enjoyed Super Pig, a platformer that also requires trial-and-error. But in contrast to Sugar Cube, Super Pig was somehow extremely enjoyable.

Stacking (PC) (2011)
Overview: Based on Matryoshka dolls (Russian nesting dolls), Stacking is a puzzle adventure game where protagonist Charlie, the youngest sibling of the Blackmore family, is determined to save his siblings from the Baron.
20140317:
Worried about missing a deadline, I couldn't sleep and focused on trying to stay awake from 6:43AM to 8:30AM. As such, I attempted to pass the time by playing Stacking. Unfortunately, I found myself too sleepy to play and decided to go sleep (at 7:00AM). I wondered how the snow day would affect the offices.
Steam Game Time: 12 minutes
[20140317][20170324 Edit]
20170324:
Stacking is an example of how story-telling and gameplay can be done well in a video game.
The only unfortunate aspect of my experience (for which I'm primarily to blame) was a headache induced by the screen in combination with drinking coffee. And, if it were not for that, I'd almost surely continue playing. In fact, the game was so good that I was playing for quite some time despite the nausea.
Game Mechanics:
The protagonist has the ability to possess a doll of the next larger size. Dolls which can be possessed will be highlighted in blue when they are approached. Furthermore, each doll has a different ability which can be used to solve puzzles throughout the game.
Steam Game Time: 61 minutes (cumulative game time) / 49 minutes (session game time)
Took a break to make a phone call.
Steam Game Time: 211 minutes (cumulative game time) / 150 minutes (session game time)
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Novel puzzle game mechanic
+ Beautiful art style
+ Humorous
+ Great tutorial / placement of gameplay mechanics
Neutral:
~ Camera can be noticeably shaky, especially when in smallest form
~ Decent number of items to collect.
~ Cut scenes are done in the style of silent films, I like them
Cons:
- Lacks a map which would come in handy.
- Some of the "Hi-Jinks" are too simple; arguably a waste of time
Conclusion:
Overall, Stacking does a lot of things right and is an example which other games should strive to imitate and/or exceed. If you like solving puzzles and scavenger hunt-like adventure quests, then Stacking is just the game for you!

I returned to the game after determining who the person who could use flatulence but apparently this solution together with the union organizer was one that I had already found.
I eventually did figure out the third solution (uppercut)
Completed "Royal Train Station"
Completed the "Final Challenge"

Gameplay Log:
Initial state of "The Triple-Decker Tank Engine" area: 06/13 solutions, 02/02 matched sets, 04/10 hi-jinks, 21/26 unique dolls
End state after a session: 12/13 solutions, 02/02 matched sets, 10/10 hi-jinks, 26/26 unique dolls (I'm missing the second solution to Sickle the Sly
For the final solution I used hints to come to the answer. In my mind, I feel like I tried this already, but apparently not (get a person sick and approach Sickle the Sly)
Got the last unique doll on "The Zeppelin of Consequence"; I had a good idea of where to start
Completed the last hi-jinks of "The Gilded SteamShip" ("Broadsides!") which ended up being different than I thought, and I found it somewhat by luck (I originally thought it meant taking the measuring person to measure someone with a broad side. But I think when I passed the pirate that it was a nautical term; completing this meant 100% completion of the main campaign.
Steam Game Time: 10.9 hours (cumulative game time) / 1.9 hours (session game time)
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Excellent mastery of puzzles - the game excels at steering players towards puzzle solutions through dialogue and the environment
+ Great use of sound and visuals
+ Creative gameplay mechanic
+ Intuitive gameplay
Cons:
- Lack of a map system results in getting lost; I suppose I could have created my own simple maps (though the last area "The Triple-Decker Tank Engine" is a straightforward area)

Alan Wake (PC) (2012)
Overview: Alan Wake is a psychological horror. Play as novelist Alan Wake as he experiences mysterious and supernatural events.
20170318:
Today I finally decided to play Alan Wake and I'm glad I did.
Setup: Keyboard, video on high, Normal difficulty.
At one point during the game, I was running for a door, and for whatever reason, I turned around to see how far my pursuer was. To my surprise, he was right behind me and I literally jumped out of my seat! I recall wondering why the heck did I even bother turning around.
Aside from that moment, the game would occasionally have me on edge, but it wasn't as scary as I though it would be.
The game was so gripping that I played the first episode without stopping ("Nightmare"). And, if the game were to instead have run continuously, I may have ended up playing the entire game. Thankfully that was not the case.
Steam Game Time: 94 minutes
Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Great story
+ Strong atmosphere
+ Plenty of ammo (in Normal)
Neutral:
~ The modeling around the mouth looked strange, especially in conjunction with the audio (not always synced)
Cons:
- The camera center being offset from the third-person character was unintuitive
- It was so annoying that it's worth two minuses.
Summary:
Judging solely from what I had seen in trailers, I built interest in playing Alan Wake, and yet there was some hesitation with respect to my compatibility with the game's genre.
And while the camera angle was a thorn in the overall experience, I was enveloped by the story and ended up enjoying the game.

Dinner Date (PC) (2010)
201XXXXX:
Various sources say this game is 25 minutes long, but Steam only logged me as playing for 21 minutes. Setting that strange discrepancy aside, my friend got me this game, because I refused to buy it (even though it was cheap). However, since he got it for me, I returned the favor by playing it.
Strictly speaking, Dinner Date is more of an experience, like Dear Esther or Thirty Flights of Loving.
However, unlike Dear Esther and Thirty Flights of Loving, Dinner Date lacked a sufficient amount of engagement.
[20151209][20170312 Edit]
20170318:
Today I went through the game and took some screenshots. From the few extra minutes with the game, I would reiterate that the game is really more of an experience. Actually, it's almost exactly like the part in the movie "Being John Malkovich" where Craig (John Cusack) begins to slightly influence John Malkovich's actions.
