Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ (PC) (2013)

Overview: Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ is more or less classic Pac-Man with a couple of new power-ups and game modes at the player's disposal.


20140926:
This game was made available to play by Steam for a couple days, and in the past, I figured there wasn't a point in playing a game if I only got to have it for a couple of days. However, today I took a new point of view: its worth it to just experience a game, and I might even make a lot of progress in a short amount of time.

In any case, this isn't your grandfather's Pac-Man. It's Pac-Man on steroids - lots and lots of steroids and whatever other drugs that are available to game characters.


Yes, Pac-Man Championship Edition can be intense. In fact, the game was so intense, that I didn't even take any in-game screenshots.

While initially strange and chaotic, I slowly began to grasp the new gameplay mechanics as I played the game more and more.

Although there are many different layouts, modes, and graphical options to choose from, most of the game's replay factor will come from trying to beat your high score. Or, for the skilled and/or adventurous, climb to the top of the leaderboards.


All-in-all, the game was lots of fun.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II (Android) (2012)

20140925:
I downloaded this game recently on my phone and seemed to be experiencing some lag (Samsung Galaxy S5).


I also found that the game couldn't detect when I wanted to press down (e.g., prior to executing the classic Sonic spin).

I suspect my phone has trouble detecting the bottom edge, because I have a similar problem with Fieldrunners along the bottom edge.


Aside from this game changing bug, I found the directions which worked still felt difficult to use: sometimes they felt uncomfortable and/or unresponsive.

With respect to using spin to unlock a door, I would voice the opinion that I didn't like it, mainly because interrupts the pace of the game.


While it was much easier to notice all the flaws, many of the classic Sonic gameplay elements are present and it was a nice nostalgic experience. However, I would much prefer playing the originals over this new version any day.

Fez (PC) (2012)

Overview: Fez starts out as a 2D platformer, until it becomes a 2D platformer with a new perspective. Yeah, trippy.



20140924:
While the game's concept is kind of cool, I ultimately found the the game to be a bit convoluted and slow-paced.

Interestingly, the game reminds me of Antichamber (2013), which is also part of the Humble Indie Bundle 11. However, I don't find Fez nearly as fun as Antichamber.

One possible reason I don't find Fez as fun is that it focuses more on the platforming elements whereas Antichamber focuses more on the puzzle elements.


Another possible reason is that the controls for Fez are much more complicated than the controls for Antichamber. While both games initially allow just movement (WASD, space bar, and mouse in Antichamber; arrow keys and space bar in Fez), Fez is quick to add six additional keys: four for looking around (IJKL) and two for the main game mechanic (A and D). Eventually, Fez also uses the left shift key, the left control key, the tab key, and the escape key. In contrast, Antichamber just adds mouse clicks for taking and releasing cubes.


In the short amount of time I spent playing the game, I found that there were some fun platforming and/or puzzle moments. I also thought the game had good artwork, though I wouldn't recommend the game for the artwork alone.

As for the music, Fez had pleasant background music. Unfortunately for Fez, I had previously played Beatbuddy (2013), and Fez's soundtrack is nothing amazing compared to Beatbuddy's soundtrack. In fact, I didn't even realize there was music playing for the longest time.

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians (PC) (2013)


20140923:
I only played the game for about twenty minutes, but I loved what I was able to experience. During that time, I encountered some solid narration, some great beats, and fluid visuals.


Of course, the game also offered some solid, novel gameplay mechanics that involved catching the beat. Thus far, however, the player doesn't have to be so precise.

On a different note, I wonder how the experience on a tablet with touchscreen controls would compare to that on the PC with mouse.



20140924:
Today I played again, mainly because the audio didn't record in my recording of the game from yesterday. I started over from the beginning, and after half an hour, finished the first level.

Dust: An Elysian Tail (PC) (2013)


Overview: Dust: An Elysian Tail is an action role-playing game. You play as Dust, wield a mysterious, living sword called the Blade of Ahrah, and get accompanied by the sword's guardian named Fidget. Note that unlike Link's fairy who follows Link around and just says "Hey! Listen!" (and "Look!" and "Hello!"), Fidget is actually useful and an important part of your fighting mechanics.

My first impression is that the game has pretty fun brawling mechanics. While it mostly feels like button mashing, there's seems to be a layer of strategy that can be perfected for higher quality gaming. However, since it was my first time playing, I decided just to mash buttons and only used an ounce of strategy.


In terms of story telling, I find the game throws in a bit too much of it in between the gameplay. I would rather there be long cutscenes that appear infrequently than short bits of dialogue that come up frequently.

In addition, the pace of the dialogue (voice acting) itself is also quite slow, further impeding on the overall flow of the game.


In any case, it seems like parts of this game encourage exploration of previously explored regions, sometimes regions which are originally unreachable until gaining an ability. This nostalgically reminds me of all the Castevania games I played back on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Unfortunately, the story telling did not have a Metroidvania feel to it.


Unfortunately, this first impression results in a low likelihood of me returning to this game any time soon. This is especially disappointing since I remember really wanting to play the game after seeing its trailers.

Note, however, that given its high reviews, perhaps I simply didn't give the game as much time as it deserves.

20150606:
Before playing today, Steam had me logged for 51 minutes (but the save file had only 41 minutes on it). Having unlocked two Steam Trading Cards, I originally intended to only play until the remaining two cards dropped.

However, having already played past a lot of story, I was able to get straight into the action and put an additional hour and thirty minutes into the game before growing tired of it. Furthermore, I believe I was using a keyboard the last time I played and today I used my Logitech Rumble Gamepad.


While I had re-familiarized myself with most of the game's mechanics, one move I couldn't figure out was the parry. A quick Google search reveals that a parry is executed by holding down the attack button when the enemy attacks. Swords will clash and the result is a successful parry.



Thoughts:
Pros:
+ Good dialogue/story.
+ Beautiful background/foreground/character design.
+ Strong fighting scheme in place.


Cons:
- Voicework is a bit slow, so while it's good, I just read the text and click.
- Some of the in-game looks funny, but if I focus on the fighting I forget about this minor detail.
- Can be confusing to navigate. While the gameplay has a Metroidvania feel, the levels do not have a Metroidvania-style map (AFAIK).
